    Extra fuel tank

The lake I frequent does not have fuel and we usually have to make a daily run to fill up 7 - 5gal cans. I recently picked up a 50gal diesel tank off an old truck and want to convert it to gas. Does anyone know the best way to clean it out and an inexpensive 12v transfer pump? Every pump I found is for low viscosity petroleum fuels. Also, would you put a fuel filter on it or count on the boat filer to catch any debris? I thought if I couldn't find a pump to transfer from the 50gal to the boat, I would use gravity to go from the 50 to a 5 then to the boat, but that just adds work. The 50gal will be in the back of my truck.

Just off the top of my head I was thinking maybe you could actual use gasoline or some other solvent to clean out the tank and then find a place that you could take that cleaning gas for proper disposal. If it was me and I got it clean I don't see why you would need another filter. If worried about it you could change the in-line one more often. I looked around on internet. There is probably a hand pump you can use to pump fuel....

So I think I cannot use the 50gal tank. In searching around I have learned that one can transport up to 440 lbs of gasoline in containers of less than 8 gallons (30L). At 7 to 8 lbs per gallon, I'm maxed out at 58 gallons. I just need to pick up 4 more 5gal tanks. Anything over that and I need a Hazmat Bill of Lading and with what I was thinking of carrying I would need a CDL.

I assume this applies to non commercial vehicles but I have not verified it yet.

hmmm. my usual load is two 6 gallon cans, one 5 gallon, and one measly 1.5 gallon can.

Wow, that is a ton of fuel per day. The super siphon hose is inexpensive and great, get 2 and you could fill from both sides (assuming the G's have dual gas fills). Maybe a gas Caddy or similar could be another option or perhaps even 2 of them if you have dual fills.
          Link to siphon hose: http://www.amazon.com/Super-Siphon-H.../dp/B000ZORJ1E
If you go the siphon hose route search for the largest diameter tube you can find for the quickest transfer, most auto parts, wal-mart or bass pro should also have them on the shelves.

I have the siphon hose and love it. The G23 does fill from both sides.

When we go to this lake we usually have 10 to 15 people going and the boat runs at least 10 hours pretty much each day. At 6 to 7gal/hour that's how it adds up. Pretty much a tank a day (65gal) and I only have 7 - 5gal tanks, so from day three forward we were making two fuel runs. The gas station is 10 miles away, so it's 40 total for two round trips, a pain.

I was really hopping this 50gal tank would solve my problem and get me down to one trip, but I'm still trying to confirm if the 440lb limit applies to private use. Can anyone help confirm it?

            Thanks

What make me think twice about the law is that the gas Caddy would require the ERG and Hazmat to haul them and I don't see that warning when you look at buying them off the web.

I have 2 of theses... Work great. I have never been pulled over by the gas police.

My .02 if you're moving that much fuel from tanks to the boat often enough, I'd spend some money on a 12 volt electric pump that can move some volume. I wouldn't want to hand hold that many cans and pump that many gallons all the time. Considering for a few hundo you could get into the aeromotive pump that's good for 150gph, or the Holley red for 114gph. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-12-801-1 Keep in mind that's free flow, so with a filter it'll be a little less. But that Aeromotive will support up to something like 750hp so a filter won't kill it that much...I've had one for years without one issue.

yes run a filter if you use an old tank....its worth the 25-30 bucks.

From what I can see there is no warning on these that say you have to have Hazmat and Emergency Training or documentation to have them in the back of your truck.

If you can haul two of those why can't I use an old 50gal diesel tank that I convert to gasoline. The only difference between two of those and my free 50 gal tank is $400 and some change. OK, $300 if I buy the suggested fuel pump. (Thanks Ryan, I didn't think of use a regular fuel pump as I was concentrating on a transfer pump.)

Any transportation guys out there that can confirm this? I'm not as worried about the police pulling me over as I am about the liability if I get into an accident.

Swank-no problem man. My buddy has an E85 drag car, he just gets a 55drum in his garage and uses a pump to transfer it, works great. Has two leads from the pump with some clips to the battery and done.

I picked the tank and pump up used for $100. The hand pump is rated at 10 GPM. I only burn 8 to 12 a day and usually just fill the boat from 5 gal tanks when the boat is in the water. I thought about going the automotive pump route but the hand pump does more volume and no battery needed.
