Texas in May

Need some info. I am planning on coming down to Texas in May to do some riding on Memorial weekend. What kind of water and air temps can I expect? Also, how busy is Lake Austin or Lake Lewisville on Memorial weekend.

What part of texas are you moving to? (austin or dallas)? Lake Austin is going to be horrible any holiday weekend. Basically tons of people go to devil's cove to party and the rest try to sneak out to lake austin with no avail. Not a good weekend to ride.

Any texas lake is not good for riding on a holiday, unless you are on a semi-private lake or get up really early.

Air temps could be anything from 70's to 90's and water temps should be in the 60's.

ag4ever is right about the lakes in texas on holiday weekends. memorial day and 4th of july are the only weekends of the year i plan NOT to go to the lake. it could be ok at some of the smaller lakes, i've never really tried many, but lake austin and lake lewisville will both be pretty busy. on the bright side the water should be pretty warm by then.

Like everyone said, the lakes are crowded on the holiday weekends, probably like everywhere else in the country. You've got people who only come to the lake 3 times a year, Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. That's the time that Dad or Grandad pulls the kids around on a tube with his bass boat, usually going the wrong way.

Lake Lewisville is crazy anyway. Seems like that lake is a magnet for people who have no idea how to drive.

Go to Lavon or something if you're going to be in the Dallas area.

Water and air temps should be very warm though! hehe.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I'm not planning on moving to Texas, even though I would love to. I was just planning on coming down for some warm water and good times. Last year I made the drive to pick up my boat from Buxton's and I had a blast down there. Warm water, lots of sun and that was a September trip.

So to summarize, lots of people but the lake and air should be good and warm.

The usual way to drive is counter-clockwise on a small lake or cove. If you have people going clockwise and others trying to go counter-clockwise it can make for exciting times.

Not knocking people with bass boats, they're just out there trying to have fun. It's just that on holidays you'll have people pulling skiers or tubers that don't do it any other times. We found that the best solution is not go to the lake on holidays.

A lot of lakes have rules about which ways traffic should go. I've noticed a lot of larger lakes don't have rules other than right of way rules. If they are on your right, they have the right of way. Or at night to make it easy, the lights at the front of the boat are red and green. If you see red stop. Green means you go.

Hope you didn’t take the bass monkey comment negative, I do prefer a lake full of them than the 3-time a year holiday warrior. We have several small lakes that require a NASCAR only driving style because of size. They also impose a no tower speaker and loud stereo rule (engines are too loud for some folks). It can be frustrating with size of boarding wakes because other driving techniques can keep one side or section of the lake or narrow cove semi-calm. By noon, the center looks like the Perfect Storm with a vortex at the center. A tubers paradise.

I suppose many of us were taught how to drive at a young age with the loops at the ends, etc. and that doesn’t happen any longer. I remember at my father yelling, “GET OVER THERE - you’re on the wrong side” while entering the bay with my sister in tow. Maybe someone out there would be willing to institute a driving clinic since many times it seems common sense remains on the dock. The States require schools to teach navigation and safety why not add a driving component. I sat through the one here last summer with my 8 year old and was amazed with the attitude of what I call the “jet-ski” crowd. It’s no wonder so many of them get injured each year.

As for holidays it’s not only the on water tactics but also the off water fireworks and non-family oriented activities that we so desperately avoid.

the thing that's scaring me this spring is every store carrying those big tubes that you pull fast and the tuber floats in the air because of the tubes large surface catching air. tube pullers are the worst about not looking where they are driving, last thing they need is encouragement to go faster.

I have to admit, they do look fun as long as I'm not looking for calm water for some boarding.
