    A Good Cause

Hi everyone. I post on this site from time to time. I hope this doesn't run afoul of any board policy regarding solicitation or what not. If it does, I apoligize. But I thought this was something worthwhile to bring to everyone's attention. I'm a mod over on the MasterCraft discussion forum and, as a MC owner, a very regular contributor to that site.

To make a long story short, Mike at MasterCraft of Charlotte is seeking donations to do something nice for a kid named Spencer who has cancer and is going through chemotherapy after his second relapse since 2002. Basically, Spencer's dog was killed and they are going to buy him an AKC registered English Bulldog and all the supplies that go along with it.

MC of Charlotte started things off with $200 and lots of people on the MasterCraft forum have started making donations. As it grew, MasterCraft has agreed to match a percentage of the total contributions.

I know this is a Nautique forum, but something like this doesn't have a thing to do with what it says on the side of our boats. This really is a good cause and I thought it was worth bringing to your attention. So if anyone here would like to help or, otherwise, has any good information on good breeders of English Bulldogs, I know Mike would appreciate your assistance.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Go to the animal shelter instead and spend the money on his medical bills.

Hey Doug, TMCOwners is a great site, and their admin Jason is a great guy too. I should check there more often...

The fact that MC themsevles is offering to support this is very impressive, very personal and I like it a lot--can't hide that. You guys accept mail?

That's not really funny, it's crossed the line as far as taste goes. IMO.

I personally love the idea and think you should post it over on more web communities such as wakeboarder.com and even wakeworld.com. Hopefully his new puppy will bring him alot of joy and happyness so he can pull through and beat cancer once and for all.

        Best regards,

I agree, pretty poor taste. Definitely unnecessary.

I am just now seeing this post. I looked at your link and it seems this has been a thread since 2004. Do you know - have they seriously not gotten this poor child a dog yet? I'd like to know specifically how much is remaining to look at covering the delta - it would be awful to continue to drag out what would make this kid redirect his thoughts and not worry so much about his cancer.

Please let me know asap - thx!

                    Scotrob,

I read some of the threads on the Mastercraft site.

As I understand it, the North Carolina Mastercraft dealer is pretty active in their area working with kids who have cancer. They put on some kind of summer camp for the kids where they take them wakeboarding, etc. Maeghan Major, the pro-wakeboarder is involved, etc. From time to time they post threads where kids they've worked with have lost their battle. Pretty sad stuff. Apparently, this kid Spencer, they've known for a couple of years. Apparently in remission for a while, and is now back in chemo, etc. On top of this, his dog got ran over by a car. So, the Mastercraft dealer put out a call for those on the MC site to see if they might donate for a new dog. Looks like some pretty generous donations ($100 and $200), and a lot of more moderate donations ($10-$20). I guess he wants a British bulldog, and they aren't cheap.

Some of the folks on the MC site said they'd post on other sites as well, and so that is how I believe Doug came to post here. The MC dealer is taking checks by mail, or Maeghan Major set up her paypal site to take a donation as well. Whatever is left over, they're giving to the cancer society or to the family for dog bills, medical bills, etc.

That's what I was able to come up with in a brief perusal.

                      RE: Re: A Good Cause

One other thing. Although Hollywood could have perhaps chosen a softer tone for his comments, I can see his point. I'm sure a dog from the shelter would provide Spencer with the love and attention he could get from a pure bred bulldog, and I'm sure his family could use the money to cover medical bills, etc. Makes sense.

But, in this case, the kids wants a bulldog, and a the group that works with these kids is trying to get him one. I'm sure it will make the kid happy and will probably make those who donated for the bulldog feel good as well. Others probably direct their charitable donations in other directions and that's great too. BKH

Thanks for all your replies. There has been a thread about Spencer for some time now. However, the thing with the dog is recent. Within the last week or so. As far as animal rescue goes, I'm a big supporter of it. But when the kid with his second relapse of cancer and third round of chemo wants a bulldog, I see no need to debate it. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me. I will be glad to answer them or do what I can to see that they get answered. Thanks again.

I often have this problem with such online, non-face-to-face conversation. I didn't want to come across as insensitive, just wanted to share my idea.
