Lots of good flashlights out there. I like Surefire, have and have carried quite a few from the days where a 60 lumen Xenon bulb was the best in a portable package to some of the newer LED technologies now that are over 250 lumens. I also have several other brands, and they're all pretty well made.

The biggest thing is the batteries. Standard AA or AAA batteries are not up for the task if it's something you NEED to depend on. Get something that uses CR123 batteries and buy good ones. Why? Lithium batteries retain their full power for about 10 years even if they sit. Last thing you want is the need for light and not getting any because of crappy batteries. I spend about $20/year for a high quality 12 pack of CR123 batteries and never worry about pulling the flashlight out of my glovebox on a cold dark night and not having it work.

If you're interested in using firearms for self defense, I could talk about that all day, but since you asked, there's my recommendation for light.

Nitecore LED lights are reasonable in price and function well. With the lite in the strobe mode it will blind a perpetrator. Then you can do whatever you want to them.

Unless they shoot at the source of the strobe?
