    New propulsion technology by Volvo-Penta

    I just saw this new propulsion system on a TV show and thought I would share.

    This new system replaces the prop, shaft, and rudder, and incorporates all three into on rotating "pod" that pulls the boat rather than propels it.

    On the show they raced 2 nearly identical yachts, the new system provided 15% more acceleration, 25% higher top end and a 30% decrease in fuel consumption. It also allowed the yacht to maintain crusing speeds in a tight turn with no throttle input. The exhaust from the system also exits below the water line rather above.

    Seeing this got me thinking, with a little tweaking this might just end up on the next ski boats.

      These were first developed for large vessels like yachts and cruise ships. I think I posted a picture of one from the NY boat show.
