    Inexperience mixed with horrible conditions.

For the record, he should have run directly across the lake and sat up in the lee until the wind died down. That, or he should have headed to the ramp as soon as the wind started picking up. As it was, he was in a no-win situation.

Is it me or does the boat look bow heavy? Wonder if they had lead bags or something up front. The whole boat look ballasted.

      Bad deal

My worst nightmare. I had a similarly bad experience without the same outcome. But it scarred me. Hindsight with experience, Charles is exactly correct. Wait it out on the lake side where the wind is coming from until late in the day when the wind dies down.

The camera moved off at just the wrong time, but it looks like he was trying to drop someone off on the dock and as he got close, the bow got pinned underneath it. Really bad outcome.

It looks like he still had ballast. At the 7:04 mark you can see him come across the lake, he looks really low and his bow is dipping - about to submarine. That's heart breaking.

omg, that was hard to watch. absolutely horrible conditions and a rank amateur captain / driver ... oh yeah, looks like he still had ballast in, guy riding in bow, etc.

that first guy just did get his slammed onto the trailer, lol

If he had lead ballast in the nose then he was in a fix, being unable to lighten the ballast, he should have moved the person in the nose of the boat to the rear. I wonder what it would cost to recover a boat like that? I bet you the paper work would choke a horse.

It looks like the Malibu is riding normal at the beginning of the video but he keeps getting water over the bow and eventually it takes on too much water and it transforms into a U-boat. Just a caution to everyone that when conditions deteriorate like this, getting everyone, including the driver, in a life vest is a must. This happened so fast that it could have been disastrous for the occupants if they had not been at the dock. I don't know what the winds were, but if you look at 4:20 the wind coming over the dam is actually picking water up off the lake. Bad deal! The driver of the yellow Mastercraft did a great job of just getting it on the trailer. Glad everyone is OK.

Looks to me like they were ballasted. At the very first glimpse the boat is bow heavy. Check out the start of this video apparently taken after they sunk. Clearly have ballast bags. You got to take extreme measures if caught in something like that. If lead bags, throw them over. If sacks in the bow, slice the bag open and let water flow down in the bilge and run bilge pump. At least then the water is not concentrated in bow.

Man, you can believe if I ever get in trouble those lead ballast bags are going overboard. Even if I threw them all, the cost would be less than my insurance deductible.

He had a kid riding in the bow.
Had this similar situation. Everyone got to put on life jackets and sit on the floor as close to the stern as possible for comfort as well as get the bow up. drove about 7-8 mph into the wind and swell until we could get leeward. Anchored up, turned up the stereo and hopped in the glassy water and relaxed for an hour.

Easy to say that now though...
