    Liability Coverage Explained

When purchasing a boat insurance policy, you should, at the very least, get a liability-only policy. (SkiSafe offer premiums starting as low as $85/year). If you get a broader policy that includes hull coverage and other features, it will generally still include liability coverage.

Liability insurance commonly provides coverage for bodily injury and property damage to others. It’s important to understand that there is a limit on how much the insurance company will cover towards such losses. This is the liability limit that you select when purchasing your policy. A comprehensive general liability policy, such as that provided by SkiSafe, will also extend to many other important areas such as pollution and contamination liability, wreck removal and other things that you may be liable for under maritime laws. A policy not specifically designed for boat insurance may fail to protect you from these risks.

Liability coverage will cover you for bodily injury or property damage to a third party arising out of the ownership or operation of your insured boat. This may cover the costs to repair or replace another party’s damaged boat and/or insured property. In addition, liability coverage will protect you in the case that you are responsible for bodily injury to a third party.

Any insurance policy will identify certain items for which liability coverage is excluded. Such exclusions may include assumed liability that is not written in the policy, liability that arises while the insured property is being conveyed, fines or penalties from a government agency, exemplary damages, or storage charges.

If you are a boat owner who has a friend operating your boat while you the boat owner ski's or is sitting on the dock, does the liability coverage fully protect the policy purchaser?

Srock, generally speaking the answer to your question should be yes, that liability coverage should extend to protect the boat owner and policy holder under such circumstances. Any of our underwriters would be happy to discuss this with you in greater detail to make sure we address any particular questions or concerns you may have about such a situation.

No matter whom your boat is insured with you should consult the terms of your policy and ask any questions that arise to make sure you understand your coverage and can make any necessary changes.

We're available at https://www.skisafe.com/ or 800-225-6560 if you'd like to discuss further. Thanks!

Is 300,000 the going limit? Or, I guess, what's average on these boats?

Excellent question. If you live in Utah or Arkansas the state requires all boaters to maintain certain minimum limits of liability. In every other state there is no required amount, but given what liability coverage protects you against it is always better to have more.

Its also worth considering if you are required to have any specific amount because of where you ski. Some lakeowners associations or homeowners associations will require boaters to obtain a minimum amount of watercraft liability insurance. Very often this amount is $300,000 or $500,000 but it should be clear from their rules. I hope this helps but reach out any time with additional questions or specifics regarding your policy!

I'm public lakes in CA and AZ, no minimum that I'm aware of... I just assume that's what my last one had been so I stuck with that

Exactly. Many umbrella policies may require you to carry at least $300,000 or $500,000 on a boat or watercraft as they only provide coverage above and beyond that amount.
