Living on the lake vs. getting a slip

If it is close enough to work, the lake choice seems simple. Ours is close enough for me (30 min), but not for my wife (50 min). We are selling the homestead when she retires in three or four years and will move to the lake. She admitted she may even be willing to commute for one year if I drive until we get to my office and then she only has to drive another 15-20 minutes to her school depending on traffic. We do need to make significant improvements to the lake house in order for it to be liable year-round. Cash flow will be tight until the house is sold since most of my free money has gone into the house and 401K.
