I USED to as well when I was younger, but now..... I'll pass. I had a top, shorty and bag dry suit that I would progressively work out of then into as the seasons progressed. I also used to do the Polar Bear charity events one of the local dealers put on every year the first week of December. That one was cold almost every year I did it. It got canceled a couple times due to ice on the lake. These days..... I'll drive someone else's boat if they need someone or watch the younger folk from the dock and drink beer.
I wish I had learned when I was younger. We extend the season as much as possible since I feel I have limited time left. I won’t surf though until it gets nice out.
Too bad it's in Cali. With the taxes, cost of living, garbage gas, gas prices and homeless problems California is a hard place to make work for a lot of people. Beautiful state but there's a reason so many people are fleeing for other destinations.
Yep. The homeless thing is tough to look at sometimes, but that’s far enough from my home. The taxes/economic part is all relative. You can make way better money here. The thing that keeps me willing to be here is the world’s best climate which is in NorCal.
My company's HQ is in SJ and I've visited there several times over the years. Couldn't agree more with the weather and it's is absolutely a beautiful state with so many different terrains to experience. You can be in the mountains one day, the desert the next and surfing in the ocean the day after. Best off no mosquitos.
Unfortunately the SJ I knew has turned in to a homeless mess in just the 10 or so years from the first time I was there. The homeless are everywhere including the campsite they set up in the dumpster corral of the hotel I stayed at last time I was in town. There are old RVs lining the side streets in neighborhoods with semi homeless and people that are actually working but can't afford the prices they charge for rent. You can't leave a thing in your car for fear someone will break out a window for something as little as a phone cord. And the really crazy part for someone not acclimated to this type of vandalism and piety theft is that people will actually blame you if this happens because apparently should have known better than leave anything of any perceived value in sight in your car. I honestly can't understand the mental transformation someone has to go through to make this type of thing normal in their head. Heck, where I live you can leave your windows down, your phone on the dash and run an errand in Home Depot and have all your stuff still there when you return.
Hopefully this self inflicted mess will stay away from where you live but if it got to San Jose with all the money in that town I fear you may experience the same in the not too distant future. Best of luck to you.....

It’s all perspective of where you are in california. We have a Airbnb rental in Santa Rosa and it’s gorgeous up there. There are homeless people but not anymore then we see in Chicago. We also spent a month in Marin county this March. If you want to see what it’s like to live in a bubble that’s it. We stayed half way up MT Tam but could make it to San Fran in 30 min or stinson beach in 30 min. Hiked in the redwoods every morning. Then we had to return to reality

Seconding Lake Travis/Lake Austin and the highland lakes.
Same here. My family and I visited last year and we enjoyed it. We are now relocating to Lago Vista. Jordan and Harris lake in NC are great too but there’s so much to do on Lake Travis.

This being said, LT is changing CONSIDERABLY at the moment. Lake Austin is million bucks and up at this time.
