SPONSORED BY HSBC, THE FINAL STOP OF THE 2006 WATERSKI & WAKEBOARD WORLD CUP SERIES RETURNS TO SINGAPORE AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER
For the third successive year, HSBC, the world’s local bank, will sponsor the Wakeboard Finals of the IWSF World Cup series on Singapore’s magnificent downtown Bedok Reservoir. This is located just off the Pan-Island Expressway and within easy reach of Changi Airport and the City’s immediate population of 3.5 million. The event will be supported by the Singapore Sports Council.
In October 2004, PUB (Public Utilities Board) announced for the first time that they welcomed ideas to liven up the Reservoir. The enormous success of the past two HSBC Wakeboard World Cup Stops at this site has proved this to be an enlightened decision. As in past years, over 17,000 spectators are again expected to crowd the landscaped banks in perfect 30C temperatures.
With no Inflation, an Economic Growth Rate of 6.4% and low levels of unemployment, Singapore exudes confidence at this time. The City will also host major international conferences for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank this month and so all is set for a perfect ending to the 2006 Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup series.
The prestige of the season’s 2006 World Cup Wakeboard title plus the Stop cash prize of US$60,000 will ensure that the World’s top ranked IWSF Riders will compete. Multiple X-Games champions Danny Harf (USA) and Dallas Friday (USA) will both take part in Singapore for the first time. Harf already took the World Cup title in Qatar, a third place in France and a second place in Beijing. Friday has had an outstanding World Cup series so far by capturing both the Qatar and Beijing titles. The reigning IWSF World Wakeboard Champion, Jeff Weatherall (NZL,) and the defending HSBC Singapore World Cup Stop Champion, Phillip Soven (USA), also plan to end this season on a high.
This World Cup Stop will be the highlight of Waterfest Singapore 2006, recognized as Asia’s top water sports festival. Taking place over the weekend of September 30th to October 1st, MasterCraft will again supply the boats and technical crew, RipCurl will provide the official apparel, medical coverage will be by Changi Sports Medicine Centre and PUB will provide the event venue. Kuno Ritschard, President of the International Waterski Federation, declared that HSBC have set a perfect example of how best to stage a World Cup Stop – with an attractive downtown location, a strong marketing support campaign and high levels of local community involvement.
