u couldn't let the engine cool, and just run it long enough to get it on the trailer?

thats the exact reason that i installed a winch. after snapping a driveshaft (engine was out of alignment when i bought the boat, thanks to The Ski Club's great inspection) and having to wade out and push the boat onto the trailer, i vowed to never be stuck in that situation again.

When we first got our 69 Nauitique I always had it hooked. Then I noticed that the eye was beginning to pull out thorugh the bow. I repaired that and now, I just let the boat sit on the bunks; so far so good. I always take it slow though.

I saw a guy do the same thing with an aluminum fishing boat about 20 years ago when a kid ran out in between the boat and the water as he was backing down. Man, when he go out I thought he would kill that kid, but the kids father got to him first and really let him have it. I thought I was going to have to call the police. Sorry for your damage, and thanks for teaching me a lesson on launching my boat.

this was very close to happening to me once. I was actualy pulling my boat out of the water. The strap broke and I didn't realize it. Thank goodness I had some friends yelling at me. I looked over my shoulder out the window, and saw the boat sliding back. I hurried and trew it into reverse and put back in the water.
Thanks for the pictures, it will remind me to be careful again this year.

I saw a guy dump an I/O that way right after he commented on the "first time boaters" taking too long at the ramp. I wasn't a boat owner at the time but told myself if the day ever comes - leave it hooked.

I came really close to being that guy at the end of last season. I few launches prior, I had put some spray wax on my bunks (easy way to wax that part of the hull). We were using a very gently sloped ramp and I didn't think it would be a problem. We backed down to the farthest point where my wife could unhook the winch without getting too wet. When she did, off we slid. Fortunately, the back of the boat was over water (just not at launch depth). No damage. But now, we don't unhook unless we're within a few inches of launch depth no matter how wet one of us has to get to do it.

I hook up the winch when pulling out of the water, and hook up the turnbuckle after i am on flat ground. Unhook the turnbuckle before backing down, but never the winch until in the water. Driving style probably has a lot to do with dumping a boat on the ramp...but the ramp can be a funny place to hang out...saw a guy back his trailer over a ledge and into a tree trying to cut a corner too sharp. He didn't need any help...I ASKED. Yellow_Flash_Colorz:

My neighbor commented when we took my boat out that the front winch doesn't need to be hooked to back in a bunk trailer. My response was "humor me".

I watched someone do that with a BRAND NEW (and I mean BRAND NEW) never been wet I/O about 15 years ago. Husband has boat unhooked, is holding a land line hooked to front of boat, while wife backs in boat. She is new at trailer backing, trailer goes sideways, she sees it, hits the brakes, trailer stops, boat keeps going. 3000# boat vs 200# dude. Needless to say the boat won. The sound of the fiberglass crunching when the lower unit hit the concrete was sickening. They managed to get it back on the trailer with the help of some others at the ramp, but I'm sure the boat sustained thousands of dollars of damage.

Leave it hooked, it costs you nothing. My wife doesn't have to unhook, I can do it from inside the boat.

Saw the aftermath of it this weekend.

We went to lauch at a ramp we usually don't use, and there was a 10 - 15 year old i/o sitting on the ramp.

We used the ramp next to it, and did some boating and came back about 5 hours latter to see them trying to lift the boat a bit to get some rollers under it. As we wanted to leave we beached the boat, and waited for them to finish as they were blocking the entire ramp (both of them). They did manage to get the boat near enough to the water that the back was almost floating. Then one of the people working to slide the boat down asked a bass fisherman to drive by and give them a wake to try and float the boat the rest of the way. Needless to say, he said his boat won't throw enough of a wake. As I was next to him and did not hear this he asked if I would do it. Sure, I can throw a wake. I filled my ballast tanks, and drove by at surf wake speed. The size of the wake was almost enough to float the boat in the original resting position.

Then the owner proceeded to get his trailer and mess up the loading of the boat about four times. Each time he would approch the trailer and by the time he was near the trailer his boat was 90 degrees to the trailer. I would guess the boat is be on the market now.

It was wierd trying to make the biggest wake possible in a "no-wake zone" with a game warden standing right there.
