First I want to thank everyone that has weighed in on this topic. It is not as cut-and-dry decision as i would have liked it to have been.

Well I think we landed on the camera. Looked at the canon xti and though it is a real good unit, it just didnt seem to feel right in my chubby hands. We are going with the Nikon D80 w/ 18-135 zoom nikkor lens. Thanks for the tip , glass does make a real difference and these dudes will try to sell you more powerful cheaper glass and claim its just as good...NOT.
So far Best Buy has the best price/ price guarantee I have found. Any input on where to buy would be great. Not everyone carries this unit, and i would rather buy local if possible.

Circuit city has the d80 kit for 1,234 online right now. They usually do store pickups.

AFTER CONSIDERABLE RESEARCH, I DECIDED ON THE D200 AND THEN ENDED UP WITH THE D80 WITH THE 18-135 LENS KIT. BOUGHT IT A CIRCUIT CITY AND COULDN'T BE HAPPIER. [SAVED $700 BY GOING WITH THE D80 OVER THE D200]

HAVE HAD IT NOW FOR 30 DAYS AND THE SKI SHOTS I HAVE TAKEN ARE AWESOME.. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE D80 KIT WITH THE BETTER LENS. YOU WON'T GO WRONG.

I have the D-200 and agree with cooperwoods the D-80 is a fine camera. I use to shoot professionally and use some features most don't but the D-80 would be fine 98.9% of the time. The sad part about these cameras is how quick they are outdated and how much they cost.

Just a quick note because I bought my Rebel XT last year around this time... Today only (11/17) Circuit City has 10% almost everything if you access them online through MSN. I bought the camera and lenses last year and saved almost $200.
