Any spring skiing suggestions in the Midwest?

We are looking for some open water in mid-late March to kick off our season. Here in Minneapolis, our water doesn't open up until mid April and some friends and I want to make a weekend trip somewhere within driving distance. Anybody have any suggestions in IL, WI, MO, IA, NE, ETC. A slalom course would be a plus, but we can always bring ours.

There is a lake a few miles into Iowa that opens really early, I just can't remember the name though. If I think of it, I will post it.

it is Clear Lake, IA. It looks like it is about 20-25 miles south of the MN./IA border.

What is this "pool" that you speak of Mark?

Clear Lake is less than 2 hours from my house, so that maybe a possibillity, thanks!

Also some 60 degree weather would be nice to go along with the open water!, now there's a challenge

"Pool" is how they label the sections of river between locks and dams.

Is clear lake the lake that isn't very clear. I was down hunting in the area for pheasants and had my dogs jump in to cool off and they both came out brown.

I do believe Clear Lake is a misnomer..... I have never been, just used to talk about going early in the year. I just wait now.

Clear lake is definitely a misnomer.

The DM river is usually open in downtown by early March as long as they don't have the water levels reduced. But I wouldn't recommend heading out there without someone familiar with it as it isn't very deep. Typically though, it is open long before any of the lakes around here are.

Nothing a drysuit can't fix. We ride a lot in very early April around MPLS, or in Chippewa Falls, WI (about an hour and a half away).

There is a power plant in redwing. So, the warm water discharge into the river keeps it open year round. I think that's where I'll have to get my February ski in this year. Pretty solid down here in Winona.

Where is the launch, and is there anything I need to be concerned with on the river?
