We are looking for some open water in mid-late March to kick off our season. Here in Minneapolis, our water doesn't open up until mid April and some friends and I want to make a weekend trip somewhere within driving distance. Anybody have any suggestions in IL, WI, MO, IA, NE, ETC. A slalom course would be a plus, but we can always bring ours.

There is a lake a few miles into Iowa that opens really early, I just can't remember the name though. If I think of it, I will post it.the WakeSlayer

it is Clear Lake, IA. It looks like it is about 20-25 miles south of the MN./IA border.the WakeSlayer

Clear Lake is less than 2 hours from my house, so that maybe a possibillity, thanks!
Also some 60 degree weather would be nice to go along with the open water!, now there's a challenge

Clear lake is definitely a misnomer.
The DM river is usually open in downtown by early March as long as they don't have the water levels reduced. But I wouldn't recommend heading out there without someone familiar with it as it isn't very deep. Typically though, it is open long before any of the lakes around here are.

Nothing a drysuit can't fix. We ride a lot in very early April around MPLS, or in Chippewa Falls, WI (about an hour and a half away).
