    RE: Re: RE: 03 sante

Luckily this is what I like to call the "untouchable room". It never gets used....ever. Probably the cleanest room in the house. Thats why I didn't feel so bad by putting my nice clean shiny interior in there.

      RE: Re: RE: 03 sante

From what I understand, the magic erasers take off the protective coating on the vinyl, so it actually does the seat more harm than good.

I still use it for very stubborn stains, but too much use can be worse than other options.

If I give you the keys to my storage unit in Somerville, will you go over and clean my boat too?

I think you are right. The only way that those magical things can make anything that clean and look that new if for it to take off the top surface of the vinyl. Kind of how you can refresh gelcoat by taking off the top discolored layer. Hopefully, I will never have to clean these seats like that again. We will all have a much better appreciation for cleaning and will try to keep it from getting that bad. Thanks for the heads up and the warning for myself and others!

so hypothetically speaking...if someone were to somehow smear black magic marker on the vinyl, this could be good to clean it with?

Why, you trying to fix something that you did last summer? Yes...in theory it should work. That stuff is MAGIC!!!

Nah, it was just a hypothetical situation to illustrate the "Magical" way that stuff works! After all, why would anyone bring a permanent marker on the boat anyways, you can't shotgun those!

I had some stains on the floor on my kitchen I could not get up even with a razor blade, and the magic eraser got rid of them. I don't know how it works, but it does.

I would be very suprised if it did not erase even sharpie marks.

                  speaker cans

i believe you can just cut the inside of your cans to have about a 1/4" lip , then drill and tap the holes , i think it is a 8/32 tap. here are mine with 8" eminence speakers.

                    RE: speaker cans

Clay....those look great. I was wondering if anyone had tried to take those diywake cans and fit 8's into those. Do you feel like the tapping into the sheetmetal flange has enough threads to securely hold the drivers? Can you post some more pics? Any of the mating of the speaker and also just the modified can?

My drivers are very similar, however, the OD for the entire speaker is: 8.296" and the minimum opening size assuming a perfect interference fit is: 7.296". With the cans being only: 7.960", that only leaves a .332" flange all the way around. While is seems like enough, the fact that the overall diameter is .25" larger than the eminence, the bolt circle centerline ends up barely hitting the thickness of the walls of the can. I have designed an aluminum adapter plate that I might try to make it fit. I have attached a pic.

Even if I physically get them to fit, I am more worried about the airspace. These cans are about a third of the recommended airspace. I have attached a pic of the enclosure that I made for these last summer. I only had about a week, to make them, but man do they rock. I would hate to sacrifice sound quality just so they don't look so boo boo.

Here's my dilemma...Do I A) Keep the speaker cans for the 8's status quo and then use the cans for an additional set of 6.5" speakers using the new wetsounds 6.5" drivers, or B) sacrifice sound quality and make them fit, just so they don't look so bad.

I'm leaning more towards choosing "A". Being an engineer, I always believe that form follows function. These things are monsterous and very solid, but sound fantastic. Going this route, I can retain the best sound while also giving me a reason to add even more speakers. I will definitely do a new paint job on the enclosures. When I did them, I only had the night before to throw a coat of rattle can paint. It works, just not pretty.

I think the exact words my asian boss said when I brought the boat up to the office was..."What are those ghetto blasters up there?"

                    You all help me decide!!!!

Definitely keep the ghetto blasters and use the new cans for a new set of 6.5"s. Maybe just touch up the paint on them, they match the white tower anyhow. Don't forget to sand off all the luv bugs from the front side.

                        speaker cans

here are some more pics. what speakers are you using ? mine are eminence beta , with a hlcd screwed on the back. if yours are pro-audio then should you worry about air space? because the 8's will not be used as woofers.

bmh, I think this a cool post. I have done a similar project to my 2000 SAN. It was fueled by more curiosity and I just cleaned a bit while I could. I guess its the mind set of an engineer to take things apart.

You should be good with threading the flange on the speaker can. Normally you would need 5 full thread for the full strength of the connection. In this case you have about 6 bolts and they are not loaded in tension so it should work just fine.

Keep me posted on your speaker project. I am looking doing the same thing but dont know alot about setting up these speakers.

Have fun on Lake Sommerville, I used to be one of the only wakeboarders on that lake when I was in college.

Gizmo...thanks for the understanding of my endeavors. I am still considering using these cans but have been strongly considering the "I need more speakers" mentality.

Clay....I could tell you the manufacturer, but I'd have to kill you. When I was designing my tower speakers I actually got some of the eminence 10's in with the horn driver. I made some test enclosures and did a shootout between those and the Brand X 8's. The 8's blew those away. They can handle much more power and just seemed to be better built. These are cast frames not stamped. The horn is actually part of the main driver (ie it cant be unscrewed like the typical setups). You will find these particular drivers used in monitors for concerts etc. Once, I get the entire system done, I will probably reveal the supplier. My original intention was to create a good sounding set to compete with the others out there. My biggest hurdle as been coming up with a cost/time effective way to manufacture the enclosures. I tried to buy some from Wetsounds, but they are not selling just the housings.

As far as airspace goes. Regardless of what type the driver is destined for, if they are meant to be in a sealed enclosure, then there is an optimum airspace requirement. What I don't know yet, is how much a difference in sound you will get by cutting the volume by 2/3's. I'd hate to ruin a set up cans just to find out.

well if you cut them and they don't sound good ,then i might buy the cans from you. fyi i used a dremel to cut the lip , and then marked the holes , and drilled at a slight angle. good luck

Just picked up the pieces from the chromer. They actually turned out pretty good. On one of the side vents, there was a scratch that was too deep to for him to get out. It's not too bad, and they look 100X better than before. I didn't know how involved it was to chrome something. You pretty much have to polish to look like chrome before you get it chromed. Not too bad for $100. Let me know what yall think. I will post some installed pictures tonight as well as some pics of my progress. I actually got a lot of stuff put back on this weekend.

                                Cheers!
