    That's a tragic story.

Never heard of a prop guard on an inboard, but the kill switch lanyard CC installs would seem to have prevented this tragedy.

I wonder how many of us actually use ours?

Pretty much none, I've got a '78 and it doesnt have one, but my buddy had a 97 Sport and now an 05 216, and I've never seen it used... After reading this though... definitely makes you think twice about it.

That is a horrific and thought provoking story.
I hardly know of anyone who uses the lanyard / kill switch at our lake. We do however insist that if there is a lanyard fitted it must be functional. This is checked annually as part of the annual scrutineering of the craft prior to first launch of the season. It's use is recommended but not mandatory. In addition, we do insist on:

The boat having suitable insurance cover.
Use of AWSA / BWSF hand signals between boat and skier.
Mandatory observer present in boat accompanying the driver.
Skier must wear life jacket. Child passengers must wear life jacket, adults recommended to wear life jackets in boat.
Maximum number of 5 boats on water at any time.
All occupants must be properly seated when the boat is under power. Definitely no standing or sitting on the engine cover.
Not directly following the boat in front.
        Use of a warning flag.

There is also a safety officer on duty at weekend busy times. This is a rota of all club members who monitor the behaviour and best practices of other water users.
These are all common sense precautions that have proven over several years to result in a safe skiing environment.
