Disclaimer...I don't hate or bash any of the big 3 (CC, Bu, MC)...I've driven, skied, and been a passenger in a MC many times (not so much w/ Bu) and think they are great.
Now I'm sure the marketing heads at MC are applauding as I make noise about their ad...but the latest MC ad on the back of WSM is wacked.
In short...the ad reads regarding the Slalom Shootout, "9 our of 12 of the best skiers chose the ProStar 197, regardless of their sponsors. And, 1st, 2nd, 3rd all chose MC."
Top 6 skiers were Jamie B. (Tige), Chris R. (Tige), Marcus B. (MC), Thomas D. (Bu), Trent F. (?), and Glenn C. (MC). I haven't found a breakdown of the bottom 6.
So the top 2 skiers didn't even have their sponsored boat there...but they chose MC "regardless of their sponsor"...brilliant.
The ad wants you to think that the pro's "really know" what's best and will jump loyalties when pride & $ is on the line.
Is it really that outrageous that Jamie B. would choose a MC when his sponsored boat is not present since and that is what he trains behind half the year at Trophy Lakes?
Also, CC's signature skiers Chris P. & Andy M. didn't make the cut - but they are not included as one of the "12 best skiers"?
The ad wants you to believe that the finalists in this particular tournament at this particular time are the best skiers - period.
Ask any of the 12 finalists if they are better than these 2 and only 1 (JB) could answer 'Yes' honestly.
In an ironic twist as to how $ talks, the 3 members of HO's famed "Syndicate" team Parrish, Asher, Cox (representing the best in past, present, and future slalom skiing) are each sitting on their repescted on boat sponsors - CC, Bu, MC respectively at the beginning of the Slalom Shootout article.
In short...
If anyone says X boat is the best hands down - they're an idiot. There are strengths and weaknesses to each model and an informed buyer will learn and appreciate the distinctions.
If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me X brand was best when I was boat shopping, I could have used it for my down payment. If you are new to inboards and looking for a tournament boat to buy...don't believe the hype - do your own research.
It's seems that CC plays nice and gentlemanly when it comes to marketing (they only talk about themselves, not the competition).
While I like the high class approach, it just seems to me that in my conversations around the dock and at different lakes with different skiers, the MC PS197 is becoming more synonymous w/ hardcore slalom skiing.
Maybe it's regional, or my head is in the sand on CC's shortcomings, or do the masses just drink the kool-aide and believe the MC hype? Probably a combination.
After 2 years of owning a CC and being around the ski scene, I've found MC owners to be critical of CC to the point where I think they are almost insecure.
Now to be honest, would I like CC to hype their winning skiers? Yes. But intelligently. In the meantime, hats off to the MC marketing department for getting me PO'd.
Wow, I'm rambling...cheers!
