The same ameoba that killed a couple of kids in Florida this summer is also around Lake Havasu...

Wow, six deaths in one summer. I've lived in Florida my whole life so know that from time to time this happens but man, what a summer. I've not let the kids in the water doen here since July. Maybe extreme but better safe than sorry. We'll go back when the water temp goes to 80 or below.

What a tragic story. Does anyone know what water temperatures are necessary for the ameoba to strive?

Naegleria fowleri is a free living amoeba typically found in warm fresh water, from 25–35 degrees Celsius (77–95 degrees Fahrenheit) in an amoeboid or temporary flagellate stage.

When does your water temperature start to drop? Seems like in the summer in Florida the water temp. would be above 80 regularly, is that true?

I've never paid that much attention to the exact water temp before but I would guess its above 80 by June? In addition to high air temperatures the other factors sem to be less rain fall and low water levels. We had all 3 this summer. Maybe one thing that a few good tropical storms do is to keep things cooler and water levels higher.
