    Ankle breaking photo

This picture is about 10 years old. My wife did a pretty good job of catching the moment when my ankle was breaking. The photo was taken with my old nikon 8008 using a 200mm zoom. Just found the shot in my toolbox and thought I would scan it before it got any more tattered.

I was riding my old connelly concept that liked to do slides in my pre-turn. It was smooth so I thought it would be fun to put my right hand into the water and slide. About 2 milliseconds before this picture was taken the ski caught an edge. Enjoy.

that is pretty wild, but not for you i guess. a bad sprain (wakeboarding, scarecrow) took out my left ankle in late may and now it is finally coming around that i can ride normal. In short terms, i was out for three months. how long did you take to recover? i asssume you had a cast and rehab to stretch it out after.

I also broke my ankle this year on a hard fall. Now that I'm getting older 42, will be 43 before I ski again, I was considering going to releasable hardshells to protect ankles and knees. Anybody have any input on these:

The bindings were the Connelly boots with the pads around the heels to hold them down. The doctor missed the break and told me to start walking on it. Nearly a year later after changing my healthcare plan I had a cat scan that revealed I had broken the top off the talus bone and that it had healed crooked with a large ridge in the joint. Luckily my doctor was good and operated on it repairing the joint to about 90%. I can do almost everything but jog or climb up hills. The ankle does OK when it's in a binding or a boot. I don't think I would ever use hardshells. I went back to good old double highwraps after my fall.

Chris196 - don't buy Fogmans to protect your ankles!! The Goode Powershells work for many - I used them for several seasons.

I've had Fluid Motions for over 3 years now. My personal experience with them has been good.

I have been in Powershells for 10 years. I like knowing that one foot will not come out while the other stays in, the cause of my ankle problems. Just make sure your bindings release when necessary. You can mess yourself up with hardshells too, and I have, but I attribute that to the old injury that was never fixed correctly. Post surgery I am doing well and back in the Powershells.

I broke my Ankle the Talus <spelling to be specific its a bone in you ankle. I was doing a simple wake to wake jump 3 years ago. Its a Suck break because you either have to have it pinned back together . Even if you dont blood flow to that bone is very low so it takes FOREVER to repair. Its one of thoes injurys that seems healed and then you jump or land wrong and Boom its back to hurting again. My advice is do what ever phisical therapy they suguest and recover the way the doctors tell you to or else it will haunt you. Repair it slow and the correct way and you souldnt have to much problems down the road.

Thanks for the info. I'm not a serious course runner, I just like to do some turns on some smooth water. I was actually about to buy an HO Nitro with Animal bindings before I got hurt. Just a front boot and rear toe plate. It's the way I've always skied.
Just for reference and to show how out of date I am, I was on an HO graphite T1 with whatever HO boot came on that thing back in the 80's. I've tried other skies, but I still like that one. Now I'm wondering if I should just get one of the wide body skis and just cruise a lttle more.

My break is not that bad. It's a nondisplaced fracture of the very end of the tibia. 6 weeks in an aircast (one more to go). I used crutches for the first 4 weeks to really give it a chance to cure and because the sprain still hurt. I'm walking on the cast now with no problems. It gets xrayed next week and in theory I'm good to go.
