    Ipod and PC question

So my laptop puked and Im not sure as of yet if the "my documents" portion can be retrieved from it.

I have almost all of the music from my PC on my Ipod (as well as a butt load of pictures) and I'm wondering if theres a way to get the tunes and pics from my Ipod loaded to this PC.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

I cannot help you with your ipod.

But here is some advice on your laptop hard drive. I'm going to generalize. If you want to attempt this exercise and you have more question, I can answer your questions.

I've lost three modern hard drives and recovered all the data but a few corrupt system files. The first and formost rule is to quit running the drive as the primary drive and trying to use it to operate a computer with it. I'll skip the logic. But you can often plug the drive into stable machine as a data only drive. The good machine needs to be running a robust OS like XP or Vista so when your data drive freezes the OS doesn't puke. Do not attempt with Win9x. For a laptop drive, you will need to buy an adapter to change the IDE cable from the box to the small form factor IDE plug on a laptop drive.

Start with getting your critical data first. Often the bad drive will heat up and stop before you are done. You may have to get the data a little at a time before the drive overheats. One drive I had would run for 10 minutes. When I got home from work I'd get 10 minutes of data then shut it down. Before bed, I'd get another 10 minutes. I got all the data transferred over a few days. The other drives worked happily as data drives for several hours at a time. As soon as you hear the drive clicking or sounding like a cricket...shut it off. Be sure you have enough space on the main drive to copy the data.

There are other options for data recovery including professionals. They may charge about 300 for recovery. They work on the averages. Most of the drives sent in can be recovered in 30 minutes like I described. Some required disassembly in a clean room.

Post back or PM if you want more help.

Try IpodRip at https://www.thelittleappfactory.com/...re/ipodrip.php. Not sure it will work with a PC but it worked on my Mac.

Essentially the ipod is a storage device. If you change settings on your pc to show hidden files you can go into your ipod from "my computer". Once you find the folder with your pics and music drag them onto your desk top. Im no expert but I have been able to do this. Dont use itunes to do this.

You might have to go into itunes first and "enable disk use" if you had not done this before, just make sure when it asks you if you want to sync to say no. I do believe you have to change the view options to show hidden folders, then you can see all the music on there and drag it off to your pc. The files will not be labled with the artist and name when they are on the ipod, but if you had the tags set on the music, the artist/album/track info will populate correctly when you add the songs into your iTunes.

Usually with the newer versions of iTunes and iPods I have found when you plug it in after reformatting or installing a new drive it will ask you if you want to move the songs off the iPod on to your computer. First install iTunes and then plug in your iPod it will ask you if you want to move the songs over or reformat the iPod. Make sure you check to move the songs to your computer otherwise you'll lose it all. Depending on how many songs/pictures you have on your iPod it can gake anywhere from 10 mins to an hr to move all of the items over.

I think that through iTunes it will only move music that you have purchased using iTunes. I would be careful trying that if you have much music that was not purchased through iTunes.
