Projects forum

Hey Jeff, what do you think about creating a "Projects" forum for people to post their restos, upgrades, and mods? I think its a great way to track progress and for people to learn from others work. You essentially create a thread for your boat and post updates on it each time instead of creating a new thread every time. Just a thought. I've seen it work well on other sites.

Interesting idea. How do you see a projects forum differing from the DIY forum that was recently added? Do you think they could co-exist?

Jeff, I thought the same thing when I read it but after I thought about it, it might be a good way for people to show off what they have done without a full DIY and may lead to intrest in asking for a DIY on a certian thing done to ones boat. It would be a good way to see what all has been done to a lot of people's boats in a condensed form with pictures and possibly help the reader decide what to do or what might be cool to do to their own boat. I think it would be kind of cool. I have wanted something like this for a while, one place to go and see other's boats to get ideas, but there is no real collective place to do that without sifting through endless threads. And when you dont know what you are looking for specifically, other than insparation, it is a tough thing to find.

Thoughts, Jeff? I like the idea of people being able to see how a project has come along and I think it's a bit more inspiring when you read through a long project build where someone has spent a lot of time and effort. It's cool to look back at Page 1 and see how far something has come and be able to easily chronicle the steps it took. In other forums, people will even go as far as to request no one else post in their personal project thread and actually link all comments to a thread dedicated to any discussion. A good candidate would be someone like Grant who has done many mods over the years and has certainly inspired others in doing so.

I still don't really see the difference in this and the DIY section. If someone writes up a project, isn't that pretty much a DIY post?

DIY is more for the reader, where a project thread is a point of pride for the builder as well. It allows people to see a project through versus each step of the way in a different thread. If you start one Jeff I'll post something, many people may not actually follow through with copying someone's mods, but it is interesting to follow a project none the less. I don't expect many people to stainless straight pipe their super sport or install rigid ballast throughout but it's still fun to watch =) I mod my boats plenty without posting here because I'm not trying to hold someones hand while they copy my ideas, but I fully encourage the spawn of ideas through these forums and hope to be one-upped.
