As many of you know, our friends over at CorrectCraftFan suffered a ransomeware attack on their server on July 7, 2020. This has been a big blow to the Correct Craft and Nautique communities, and I hope they are able to get their site operational again soon. There is so much valuable information on that website, and for that information to be lost would be a real tragedy. Owners of older Correct Crafts especially have no better resource than CCF and the vast knowledge that is recorded and stored on that website.
The attack on CCF has prompted me to reevaluate the security and reliability of PlanetNautique, and to review our procedures for protecting this site from similar attacks.
Our web host completes regular backups of our site, including our database. That's great, but I have learned over the years not to simply rely on others to protect something that I consider valuable. Therefore, I have started taking weekly backups of our database myself, and I store those at various locations on encrypted drives. I also backup the contents of the website itself (stuff that isn't in the database) in the same manner.
As most of you know, I am very vigilant in installing the latest updates for our site software as soon as they are released. Most of these updates include security enhancements, and that's why I am so careful to install those right away when they are released. There are always posts in this section of the website when I install a site software upgrade. This usually happens about once or twice a month.
I have reached out to the owners of CorrectCraftFan to offer my help in restoring their site. I am not sure how much help I can be, but the offer is there. I really hope that their site is able to be brought back online, and I look forward to seeing it up and running again soon.
