Hi Guys,

Can you please either remove or extend the time window in which users can edit their posts? It seems like there have been a lot of situations lately in which a person either has regretted posting something, posted incorrect information, some inaccuracy in the form of a photo, or otherwise simply needs edit access to their post - and they are getting blocked by the 10 minute window set in place by your instance of PNPHPBB.

I think this would be a very helpful addition and would have resolved several issues that I have seen on the site in recent months. On the forums at wakeboarder.com and the2001.com I allow users to edit their own posts at any time and there has never been anything to show that it has been harmful in any way.

I think this would be an excellent addition to the already great site you run.

I'd prefer if there was no editing allowed. Editing the post without mentioning what you edited makes posts really hard to follow after responses are posted. One step below this that would really help would be if the post said it was edited at XX time just like the malibu crew site.

Rather than editing my original post, I'll go ahead and add that removing the ability to edit keeps a running track record of a thread as it changes. If you write something you regret, well, too bad. That's life.

I'm inclined to agree with M3Fan. Users here used to be able to edit posts indefinitely, but people were going back and editing their posts once someone disagreed with them, causing entire threads to not make any sense. That's one of the reasons the limitation was put into place. We'll take the opinions of everyone into consideration, so (anyone who wants to) please post your thoughts on this.

why not write in a rule that shows that the post has been edited. i've seen it on many other forums

i hate having back to back posts just because i forgot to mention something. and i don't think that the argument thing will be an issue. it is pretty easy to tell when someone changes a post in an argument, because more than likely it will not follow along with the rest of the thread. (besides, someone will be able to call out the "editors" lol)

People don't really do that though. I understand what you are worried about. But that is an issue that exists more in theory - than in practice.

Otherwise I would have disabled it on wakeboarder.com years ago. It really doesn't disturb the cadence of the conversations like you are inferring. Swear.

Jeff this is one of my favorite sites on the Web. I would never recommends anything to you that I thought could negatively impact the user experience here.

a precision rifle forum that i frequent has a little box at the bottom that allows u to give an explaination for the edit... it is an option on there, but i'm sure it could be made a requirement. of course, anyone that would edit a post for arguments sake would probably lie about their reason for editing as well...... i'd just ban someone like that though :P

I have a question regarding editing.....why is it that this site automatically edits certain words in a post? For instance, I posted this morning that something "pi$$ed me off" and when I read the post after submitting, the wording changed to "upset me".

Come on, is pi$$ed off such an inappropriate phrase? To me, an automatic edit of that is pretty ridiculous.

I'm with Jeff on this. This way people thinks before writing their post. It stays a lot more clean this way.
I had a problem with a reply from myself before and I asked Jeff to edit it. As long it's not a problem for Jeff and if it's not done reguarly it's a good way I think.
If it's gonna change, then the argument of editing needs to be added imho.

Certain words and phrases are set to auto-edit on this site. I'll agree that we're pretty strict about the language used on this site, but that's just the way it is. I think you'll agree that anything that is set to auto-edit conveys the same idea as what was originally posted, but in a more family-friendly manner.

Problem is a year or two ago when we did allow people to edit their posts we had some very real problems with this. Some users were completely changing their posts and it was changing the context of the thread or making it difficult to follow.

We’re open to suggestions and we constantly review our policies. So we appreciate your feedback, even if we don’t make the change, we keep it in the back of our minds for possible future change. I can definitely see where post editing would be helpful, one example I’ve noticed is the buy & sell forum.

Currently if something really needs changed, you can message either Jeff or myself. We’re both pretty easy to get in touch with via email & pm.
