Plastic cups behind stock speakers?

What is the reason for these pvc cups behind the speakers. I am replacing the stock speakers with Polk's and was wondering if I need to keep them with the new Polks.Thanks

I think they are to hold the grill cloth in place or possibly just reinforcement to the gunwhale pads to support the weight of the speaker. You don't need to remove them to install 6.5" Polks.

Well I just tried the Polk grilles over the existing speakers and it wont fit into the apature next to the drivers foowell, so i will have to fit them behind the existing net grills.
