I replaced the XMD1 with a CMD5 in my 03 SAN TE. Do you have another question or simply taking a poll?

Clarion offers a mouting plate for going from the XMD1 to CMD5. The mounting hole pattern on the CMD5 is different than XMD1. The mounting plate gives guides for drilling the new holes, but utilizes the old hole for the unit itself. Unfortunately on my particular boat the old hole was too high for the new deck. The glove box lid contacted the top of the CMD5 before it could be closed. In order to fix this I routed material out of the plastic glove box lid. It works great now and you can hardly tell it was done after the fact. It isn't even noticable unless you know what you are looking for. Plus it is all on the inside. There is also a stainless steel plate you can get that accomodates the remote for the CMD5. I believe some people say the XMD1 remote will work to some extent with the CMD5, but I went ahead and update this as well. The remote plate came from my Nautique dealer as well as the Clarion mounting plate. I used the same remote cable.

I can provide pictures too if you would like.

Good luck - let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks.. i haven't bought it yet but i'm thinking that is the one to go with. In my boat, the 01 Sport the stereo is to the right of the driver's seat, so hopefully i won't have a problem.

I just installed an CMD5 in place of the XMD1 in my 02 Super Air last weekend. My boat also has the stereo to the right of the driver seat. I didn't know about any mounting plate so I ended up improvising. I may go back and revisit this now.

As mentioned, the new mounting holes don't line up with the existing ones so I had to carefully drill new ones. I found that the XMD1 sits a little higher rubbing up on the padding at the top of the factory cutout, but it does fit. I ended up making my own black plastic valence to cover up the oversized hole left by the CMD5. Not perfect, but it's mounted securely and isn't a total eyesore.

I'm more than a little disappointed by Clarion for creating a completely different form factor along with the abandonment of the C-BUS verus the newer CE-NET connections. It basically means you scrap your CD changer, remotes, etc. and buy it ALL again if you want everything to work perfectly. The only consistency between the two head units is the wire harness so you don't end up re-splicing into all of the speaker and power wires.

I wanted Sirius on the boat so it was worth it to me, but definitely not a straight-forward swap on Nautiques of our vintage. It's also nice to be able to actually see the stereo display in direct sunlight, unlike the old one.

Did some digging. The mounting bracket is CM-ADAP-R. I found two places in a Google search selling this. One for almost $50 and another for $28. Guess which one I ordered.

                We'll see how it works.

If you could would be great. We are just about to go through this process of updating from a XMD1 to a CMD5 in a 210 SANTE. Any info would be great thanks.

jberndt, how did that bracket work out? Our XMD1 just took a dump so we want to just upgrade to the CMD5.

I got the bracket last week, but haven't had a chance to install it yet. For what it's worth, it's just a "fancier" version of what I did with black plastic. It's 1/8" annodized aluminum with double-stick tape on the back. It probably adds some stiffness to the whole install once it's mounted, but the only thing it "adapts" is the size of the hole left over from the old unit.

Any updates on this? Pickures of the Clarion bracket would be greatly appreciated. I'm considering upgrading from my XMD1 to either a CMD4A or a CMD5. Any recommendations on that decision?

                          Thank you,

FYI....I found out that the Aluminum Clarion CM-ADAP-R bracket does need to be trimmed or cut down some to fit in the right side of the drivers console on my 02. It would fit without modification for the glovebox installations. The CMD5 is not as wide as the XMD1, however it is just as tall.

Here are some very initial photos of my XMD1 to CMD5 conversion. I have been slowed down because I will have to modify the bracket to fit into the existing pocket in the driver side panel. Now I'm considering replacing the Clarion 1622 6.5" speakers with a low cost option like the Polk db-651's.
