Upgrades to my 04 SAN 210 TE!! SUGGESTIONS? STEREO/PROP etc

    Hi everyone
    So here's the deal:
I am looking to upgrade the entire stereo on my nautique and have an idea on what i am going to do let me know if you would do anything different.
-First of all, the way the stereo is set up from the factory is horrible, there are 6 cabin speakers total, 4 fusion tower speakers, standard clarion head unit that came with most 04 210's and 1 Clarion 280 watt amp (2 ch) and 1 480 watt (4 ch). There also is the rediculous excuse for a 10 in sub underneath the passenger seat in the cylindrical box that is zip tied-up!! and all this is straight from california correct craft! So tell me, how did they expect to get a decent sounding system with a total of 760 watts and 10 speakers!?? they have 4 of the cabin speakers hooked up to the 4 ch amp as well as the subwoofer. then all four of the fusion tower speakers are hooked up to the 2 ch 280 watt amp and then, they hook up the two bow speakers to the head unit. Cheaply and rediculously installed in my opinion when you pay 65 k for a boat. But, here is what i'd like to do:

    - I'd like to add an additional 2 or 4 ch amp with enough power to power 4 new WS PRO 60x tower speakers, use the 280 watt and 480 watt combination to power the 6 interior cabin speakers (I am going to replace all 6 with new coaxile's), add an additional monoblock amp to bump a 12" sub (i have not decided yet), and then put the WS 420 equalizer/crossover to top things off. The 10" sub underneath the passenger seat is going to go and i am going to add the 12" on the outside underneath the driver steeringwheel..Sound like a good plan??

    Questions:
-Where would be the best place to put the subwoofer?
-Where do i find a custom mounting bracket for the WS 420? I have seen a custom one on a malibu wake setter but dont know where to get it..
-Also a random question..: What is the best pitch and size for a new brass prop?? I'm looking to put at least an additional 1000 pounds on top of the internal balast system. I have the excalibur 330 V8.

If anyone reads this and has any advice about ANYTHING, please post!!
    Thanks a lot!

I had the same problem as you with an 08 factory system. Although I am still waiting on my new Alpine head unit/remote to come in, it still sounds pretty good with a Clarion processor. Here are pics of my solution to the horrible factory setup.

          SC,

While this might not apply exactly to your goals, most Nautique owners should understand that most of the factory equipment installed in recent models through `08 is decent stuff in general:

a.) Every factory system needs to retuned, gains, crossovers, etc. It’s never right.

b.) You’ve got to get any coaming speakers off the source unit power and properly powered. Convert two channels from the tower speakers to the bow. Add a larger amplifier to drive the tower speakers.

c.) The MOMO coaming speakers are very good in the boat. However, MOMO speakers won’t ever perform on the tower because they are less sensitive, have a linear response (don’t have the extra kick needed on the highs) and simply won’t project. So if you’ve got MOMO 6.5 on the tower, upgrade them. The dB 6X9s are okay with more power.

d.) The MOMO 10-inch will sound great in a 1.25 cu. ft. ported enclosure. The factory box must go! This size of box is going to be confined to the port side locker. In order for a sub to perform in this location the locker must be vented for the bass radiation to flow outside of the console. A .675 sealed enclosure can usually be concealed under the driver’s helm as the next best option and without too much customizing.

          SC,

If you can make a posterboard template to display the mounting or exterior pattern, we can make it for you out of polymer or aluminum.

                2004 SAN - my recommendation

You can do it in pieces or all at once. The biggest single improvement would be to pull the stock sub and put a two 10" sub box behind the driver as many others with similar boats have done (try that search button).

The next biggest improvement would be to replace the tower speakers with something loaded with HLCDs like Wetsounds 485s. Fusions are probably OK for now if the chrome is still intact.

Power, keep your existing amps and add another APX480M. Run one 480 to the boat (4 main cabin off rear channel, 2 bow speakers off the front), run the second 480 to the tower, run the 280 fully loaded to the sub or upgrade to a 1000W class D sub amp.

The deck is probably fine, you will likely run the IPOD most of the time anyway. Add an EQ so you can balance the power between the boat, tower, and sub.

The boat speakers are probably OK, you won't notice a huge improvement but you can add Cam's Polk Momos, Polk db's or Wetsounds XS650s, or others. Set all crossovers to boat speakers in highpass at 100hz. Set tower speaker crossovers the same way, set the sub amp crossover in low pass at 80hz.

add a spare battery (if it doesn't exist already)

change the prop to a 14XX (search button again)

                Enjoy.

                    Gains...

Isolate on amp at a time, start with the gains down on the amp, turn the head unit up to 75%, run the gains up until you start to hear distortion, then back it off a little.

If you have an EQ you will need to fuss a bit more, set the amps gains at midpoint and use the eq gain to raise lower output as needed.

Mikeski - You're better than that, buddy...
That way is a very accepted way to do it, but it's not right. You have to get a test tone cd, which you download from the BCAE1.com site. there's also a chart on there that explains all this in section 63, which covers setting your gain controls. You input your ohms of speakers, watts of speakers (rms) etc., and the chart will give you a number to look for on your milliameter. You then play the cd (unhook your speakers cause it's annoying) and each track will apply to a different sized speaker. then you turn up the gain until you reach the number on your milliameter, then move onto the next speaker until finished and then hook those speakers back up. Look at section 63 of www.bcae1.com for more details. Or you can just turn it up until stuff starts to break and then turn it down some. The main advantage to doing it right is that you can turn it up and never have to worry about siezing a speaker or amp.
I also know that the dropoff for crossovers is not immediate, but I like to set my interiors at 100 and up, and my sub at 100 and down, to make sure all my frequencies are getting picked up by something.

                            04 prop

                            SCAutosound,

The prop your looking for is the ACME 1464. I am running this on my 04 SAN, with 1200 lbs of additional ballast. Way more holeshot that the 644 (stock team prop), but a liitle less top end.

As long as you load it evenly, the 1464 will handle as much weight as your boat can. It also holds speed better while surfing.

On a side note: I've got a 12" sub (sealed) in each of the rear lockers. They're installed towards the front of the locker, against the rear seat. The speaker is mounted a 45 angle, so that it fires towards the open space near the gunnels. They vent pretty well into the passenger area through the open space. If I did it over I would have a ported box made and direct the port towards the same open space. It takes a lot of power to get volume out of the sealed boxes.

Even with the 12's there is still plenty of room for plumbed in ballast on top of the tanks.
