    Sound deadening material?

I'm redoing the stereo in my 89 ski right now. Last summer I noticed that the engine noise would drown out the stereo alot of the time so I want to put some sort of sound deadening material in the inside of the clamshell.

Has anyone done this and do you have a materia lyou would recommend? I knwo Dynomat makes stuff that is safe for underhood use, but they sure do like it an awful lot$$$. Is there anything else out there?

You can buy insulation kits from Overton's.

I looked in Overtons and I know they had it at one time. I also took a quick look on SKIDim.com I couldn't find there either. I'd give skidim a call they have always helped me out.

I looked on Skidim and didnt see anything either. I havent given them a call though. I've been surfing car audio sites and so far I have found a product called B-Quiet (www.b-quiet.com) Thats suppose to be comparable to dynomat but cheaper. It runs about $40 for 12 sqft. That's probably what I'll end up going with.

Another thing I'm seeing recommended is "peel and seal" roofing material. Supposedly its not the "best" choice, but certainly the cheapest. Since all I want to do is cut out some engine noise, this may be my best choice. I'm going to check on prices of this stuff.

I would recommend going another route. What you need, Chris, is a bigger amplifier. I find the best solution is to get the engine sounding nice, and then get the stereo so you can turn it up louder than the engine!!! It's a great solution! Let me know when you're putting that stereo together, if you have any questions.

Anyway, I checked last night and they didnt have any of the "peel and seal" stuff. If I decide to do this, I'll probably go with the B-quiet material.

Seems like you are asking for trouble due to none of the products being able to withstand the heat developed inside the clamshell. I'd say within the first one or two long outings you will have material hanging down and getting into the workings of the motor. Besides that the sound from the engine resonates throughout the entire boat through the bilge/hull area.

The ones i was looking at were safe for underhood use so I'd assume they would be fine in the clamshell. The resonating is a good point though. Thats why I was wanting to know if anyone had done it.

I agree. The car audio sound deadening stuff will come unglued with a lot of heat. Even the stuff designed to go under hood might not withstand the heat under a engine cover. The hood of a car is subjected to a lot less heat than a boat engine cover because the bottom of car engine compartment is open and gets airflow. I would worry that the stuff would come unglued and melt on top of the motor. Go with an amp, you will have no problem overcoming engine noise.
