Doesn't most of the noise come from the exhaust - what about a fresh air exhaust (FAE) system?

Come on Chris,
That's the best part about the Nautique! You either hear that big 351 telling the I/O's that it's time to put up the tube and head in for lunch, the Nautique's are on the water, or you hear your stereo. I just can't imagine wanting to soften the noise from that big V8...Travis Fling

yea that was actually my first thought. I did this to the floor of my truck. It really helped cut down road noise, but wherever I had a floor mat on top of it it would get sticky during the summer. SO I was scared the heat under the clamshell would do the same thing.
If I can find some that wouldnt that would be my first choice.

Do a google search for "boat sound proofing" - there are a number of different suppliers. I bought some sound proofing material at BoatersWorld a few years ago, it's on their website but it says it is no longer available. I would try one of the suppliers from the google search and be sure to use something specific for engine compartment use. There is a lot of material that will work when the engine operates normally, but it also has to withstand any malfunctions (i.e. excessive heat, flames etc...) within the engine compartment.

Check out Summit Racing website. I have purchased sound deadening mats for my 56 chevy Belair. If you buy the Summit generic brand you will save a few bucks and it is manufactured by Hush Mat . Summit just slaps their part number on Hush Mats box... It has held up real well so far and that is even after i stuffed the 454 Big block motor under the hood.

I also want to do this. I find this article to be very insightful about the project.

They claim the kit can be purchased from Overton's also, but I have not had luck finding it.Now

I'm not sure you will be satisfied with your results. Most of my sound was from the exhaust. I operate a manufacturing company and made a copy of a FAE system (fresh air exhaust) my wife and I are both big music fans and the FAE is a dream come true. I do not know the db reduction but I would guess the sound level with the engine running is half what it was, even a 21 MPH which is my boarding speed. People on the lake noticed and joke that I could sneak up on them now.
I just don’t see the engine cover insulation helping much. Sounds like a good idea but with my FAE I still don’t really notice noise from the engine cover. But in light of the cost they charge for the FAE it may not be something you want to invest in. I think I spend $200.00 for the parts but of course the labor was free in my case. I don’t recall the cost of a factory FAE but I believe it is 6-$800.2012 Team Ski Nautique ZR409
