Wire 2 subs on 1 channel in parallel?

Okay, my new to me boat came with a monoblock Alpine amp with only 1 speaker pair out. It also came with 2 Kicker 12" subs (only 1 of which was hooked up). Is there a way to wire the subs together, not do damage to the system, and have them both work properly? Is it as easy as wiring the subs in parallel? Would I gain any benefit from the second sub? They are right next to each other.

Forgive me, I am a noob at car/marine audio.

That amp will run @ 2 ohms, so go ahead and wire them in parallel. You will gain some extra oomf!

That is kind of what I thought. That's great news. Cheap and easy, just like I like my... .

Hey now!!! Yep you can just run pos 1 and pos 2 to channel 1 pos and neg 1 and neg 2 to channel 1 neg and should be just fine. Should give you a little more kick, eh?

Watch the amp, if it is running too hot it's possible you are below 1 ohm with the subs. If you have a multimeter you might want to measure the resistance of the subs. It will not be exactly the same as the impedence but it should be close. If you get less than 1 ohm when they are wired together you might have issues. For example if each has dual 2 ohm voice coils already wired in parallel then you will be down to 1/2 ohm load on the amp so you would need to wire them in series. If they have single 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm voice coils wire everything in parallel and you should be good to go.
