Fitting 6.5 inch speaker in 2001 SAN Driver side kick panel

Searched through 10+ pages of threads and didn't see any pictures of the 6.5 inch Polk MMC650's installed in the driver side area on a 2001 SAN.

I plan to flush mount install in the other 3 locations but was curious how I can pull off the install. Seems like it will be somewhat of a flushmount as well but wasn't sure if the speaker would just be able to sit on top of the "entrance" into the speaker pocket.

    Thanks guys!

I'm wondering about this, also. I've seen a few pages of flush-mounts but nothing on the driver speaker. Anyone?

Cmon guys, I know there've been more than a couple threads with the speakers converted to flush-mount on '01 era Air's. What did you guys do with the driver seat pod speaker??

I am interested in this option as well as I am getting ready to tear into this project as well on my 02 Sport.

Figured it out. Super Easy install.

Ill take a picture of the back later today but we ended up buying 3 inch long screws and some metal pipe straps. Screwed two peices of the metal strap to the back of the speaker mount and then put the long screws through the holes on the straps and cranked them down tight.

I see that you've disconnected your clock, etc. in the side panel. Did you have to do that to get the panel out? Do you have to remove the panel completely to replace the Head unit? Looks a bit different than mine. vr6mole.....thanks for the picture.

Removing the side panel is pretty much required to do the speaker install. Takes about 15-20 minutes to get everything off. You only need to take the screws off the actual dash itself and lift it up to get the side panel out. We left everything plugged in on the actual dash piece.

To remove the gauges on the side I would recommend to take a picture before you unplug anything. Then remove wring from one gauge, remove gauge, and then plug it back into wiring on the other side of the panel. Do this when you reinstall everything and you shouldn't have any issues with the wiring.

Throttle can be removed with an allen wrench from the bottom.

Here are some pics how vr6mole and i did our install, like he said it was a lot easier than we thought it was going to be. The speaker grill hangs a little on the bottom but barely noticeable.

OK, I'm reviving this thread because I've actually put the wheels in motion and have three of my four speakers now front-mounted. Of course, the lone wolf is the one in the driver panel. I've completely removed the panel so am ready to go, partly in order to put in a new voltage gauge but I'm also going to put in my last Polk. I can't seem to get it to fit like liquid-diet's. Anyone else tackled this or can offer up a different solution. The Grant threads are no longer available here nor on wakeworld.

Anyone know if the 5.25" db grills look similar to the 6.5's? I'm wondering if I could score a set of just those grills then I could rear-mount the 6.5 and the grills could be recessed into the opening. Just a thought, not that I've seen tons of listings for those grills.

I mounted the drivers 6.5 from the rear and left the stock fabric grate in place. I does not match, but you cannot see it so....

i got mine to fit in nicely and even put LED rings behind all my speakers. while the driver panel was the trickiest, do exactly like the above and use metal strapping and 4" threaded bolts, cinch it all down with a wing nut. should work like a champ

I'm going to revive this thread one more time....

I'm interested in upgrading the cabin speakers / removing mesh covering in my '02 SAN. But, the drivers pod speaker is giving me the same problems as its given others in this thread.

Fitting the 6.5" in the pod as mentioned is an option but I'm not crazy about it.

Has anyone put a 5.25" DB in the drivers pod speaker placement? The 5.25" looks identical to the 6.5". The 5.25" should fit flush correct?

Just wondering if this had been discussed before and there was a reason (other than not being able to buy a single 5.25") it hadn't been done.

Thanks in advance for any responses.
