    99 Air Speaker Replacement (Pics)

Some pictures of my 99 Air speaker replacement. Previously I had that cloth mesh speaker covers with some 5 1/4 behind them, decided to take those out and top mount some Polk db651.

Did you notice a big change in the sound quality?

proud2bcc, honestly the speakers that were in there were blown, so anything would have sounded better. If they were in good working order i'd guess that to some degree not much that having a layer of mesh and then a layer of fabric would muffle the sound somewhat.

I added the same speakers last year, and I think they're no contest from the OE clarions ( I think) to the Polks. I noticed a large improvement over the original speakers.

Did you take the interior out? or just cut the hole out bigger and remove the speaker with the panel still in the boat?

djs, I took the interior out. Before the speaker replacement I had the mesh grill with the piping aournd them. So what I did was remove the back mounted speaker, and cut out the mesh layer and the cloth layer. I left the vinyl piping. I then placed the speaker in the hole, with the grill on it and used a pen to mark my 4 mounting spots. I used an ice pick to poke the holes through the vinyl. I was lucky enough in most cases that the hole was inside of the vinyl piping. I made sure the hole was big enough to put a small drill bit though with out wanting to wrap up the vinyl. I did not use the screws that came with the speakers instead I got 2in. stainless steel bolts and bolted them in with stainless steel nuts.

I'd go with this method. Doesn't require holes to be drilled through the vinyl.
