    sub selection

I am looking at a 10"solo-baric L7 to minimize space use. Any other sugestions? Also amp size? I don't need a real loud system, just want it to sound good. :???:

I do not have a Nautique yet. A 230 in my future to be exact. I currently have a 10" Boston Acoustic sub in my boat. I use a Kicker MX700.5 amp. I know when I get my new boat, I will use the current Polk Momo speakers, but might change out the sub and fabricate an encloser. Not sure what year your boat is and the placement of the sub, but if it goes under the left side compartment, I would look into a sub encloser from www.audioformz.com I have one of these in my boat, and WOW it is awexome. I am new here so let me see how I can post a picture of the sub encloser. I hope this helps.

I have been using solo-barics in my Nautiques for 11 years now, i started with a 12" and now using a 15". I would recommend using an Alpine PDX marine 1.600 amp, 600 watts should be plenty of power for your sub.

Hey SuperSquirt, that 15" must really thump! I'm looing at a 10" square, same as 12" round. It will be under spotter seat on my 210. Is your box ported or sealed? I was told sealed takes more to push than ported. Thanks for all your help 8-)

My box is sealed and barely meets the minimum cu. ft. of air for that sub. It has a 600 watt PDX amp on it and it THUMPS, low end is great and more than enough bass i would ever want on a boat.

For very small spaces I really like the Boston Acoustics G3 12-inch sub in a 1.0 cu. ft. enclosure. You can add a tuneable 12-inch passive radiator to the 12 without increasing the displacement. And, the efficiency is decent on this model so it will work well with 300 honest watts (500 watts max).

Hey David, what's the setup with the passive radiator? Main speaker on one side...radiator on the other?

                jchamlin,

Yes, one of each at opposing ends. 3/4-inch stock with a 1-inch baffle on the active driver side.

Since the G3 exerts serious internal pressure, we encase the terminal cup/binding post for a double seal. When you properly mass-load the PBR it sounds closer to sealed with output closer to ported.

Thanks for the info David. I currently have a bazooka tube in the driver's side kick panel and have been thinking about an upgrade. Would the G3 setup fit in there or be better suited on the passenger side? I seem to remember you or someone else saying sealed is ok on the drivers side, but ported is better on the passenger side. I'd need a new amp since the tube is self-amplified so what's good to pair with that?

I have a JL 12W3v3 in my car...how does that compare with the G3?

I just put in a sealed box from Earmark with a 10" BA G5. It was installed on the passenger side and it sounds loud and tight. I've got an Alpine PDX-5 amp powering the sub and the interior speakers. I also had a Bazooka tube in the same spot and it sounded horrible. This was a huge upgrade to what I previoiusly had. My brother posted some pics of the install last week. I believe there was a pic of the sub.

                      jchamlin,

I'm definitely a JL fan. Its hard to make direct comparisons but the B.A. G3 is closer to the performance of the W6. The G3 is a bit more efficient and most importantly works in a more compact enclosure. That's the key to the Boston subs... Small size when you've got to have it. Only one cubic foot gross for the 12 and one half cubic foot for the 10.

With the encased terminal and thicker baffle the exterior dimensions of the 12-inch box is 13-1/2 x 13-1/2 x 14 or any other multiple that arrives at the same 2551.5 external cubic inches.

You can add a passive radiator to either the 10 or 12 without changing the displacement.

Generally we fit a maximum of a 10-inch under the driver's side. If you want a 12-inch that is going to go on the passenger side.

A JL G1300 is 300 watts into 2-ohms which is enough for the DVC 10-inch. I would go with a G1700 for the 12-inch.

99ProAir, did you and your brother consider any other subs? Is the G5 too much or just right, considering the boat environment?
