Sub in drivers foot area

I'm pulling together a stereo in my 2001 Air and have a question.

I've seen quite a few examples of people building a box that sits at the drivers feet. I haven't pulled off the current panel that sits down thier but attached to it are bilge switches, the breaker box and my heater hose. I am assuming that it is a bunch of blank space behind the panel based on the installs i've seen.

The heater hose is easy to relocate or build into the replacement box that would sit in that space but i'm a bit worried about moving the breaker/fuse box and bilge switch.

I could build all of them into the new box but i'm concerned the sub vibration would negatively affect the switches.

If someone has done this what was their solution?

I know a lot of people put the sub in the passnger compartment but I hate to lose that storage. Another option is the rear locker but its a fairly high moisture area and this will be a non marine rated sub (kicker L7)

I am currently working on doing the same thing in my '99 SSN/SAN. I did not want to let my passenger compartment space go either. Also, I am moving from subs in the back engine compartment as well due to moisture and the amount of sound you lose.

Behind my panel was just the electronics wiring (which I cleaned up and put in one large flex hose), fuel line and vent, and my steering cables. Sounds like you have a heater so your heater box will be back there and you will have to contend with that.

I am trying to keep things as stock looking as possible, but you may be able to move yours out a bit from stock and sacrifice some foot room to gain some area. I am going with a single Wetsounds 12 running off a JL Audio 500/1. Should have the box built soon and will post pics.

It's pretty empty back there on my 99 Air. The heater hoses were actually the biggest issue for me. Also, what are you going to do with your heater vent hoses? I'll post some pics of my setup shortly.

Here is my sub box out of the boat. I will take some pics this weekend of the space behind the sub and the subs put back in place.

If you do not have a sub already, consider the Kicker marine 10". It's very shallow and could mount pretty easily down there I think.

The small requirement (0.88ft^3) for that sub will work in my favour.

I have the sub already, I got it in exchange for some free pulls this summer, nice.

I think i'll set up the heater hose similar to what you've done Chexi.

Where does your fuse/breaker panel sit?

I'll have to check, but I think it sits higher up.

Note, I may have to shave a bit off that custom upper piece with the hoses. It is really tight to get everything in there (for 1 person for sure), especially with the rigid tube that sits behind the bezel of the heat tube that pulls out. It fit fine (but tight) on my test fitting without the heater tubes in, but last weekend when I put the tubes in, I could not get it to work by myself. I will know more this weekend as I will have a helper.

Note, if you are only going with a single sub, you may be able to incorporate the blower tubes into the sub box. I'm not sure how bad that might affect the accoustics, but unless you go with a single sub and a really shallow sub box, you won't have a perfect rectangle anyway.

Note, if you have a 12" sub like mine, the box would have to be angled forward. The 12"ers are too tall. The box would run into the steering column brace.

It worked well enough. With a single sub I do not see a problem with what you are thinking of doing.

i have a 2001 air and am also in the process of building a sub box. one thing to remember is that the 1999 air's did not have a computer box.

anyways, have you taken a look behind the panel yet? it is a mess, especially with a heater in there. we didn't feel like making a whole new panel for everything so we just made a sealed, down-firing box that will fit behind the left side of the panel. it is an extremely tight fit and the specs are not quite right but it should add some thump.

i will try and find some pictures.

Not sure what the 01 is like, but my 03 has a hump right behind the panel on the floor that the base of the panel screws to. I tried to do some digging to find the thread where Grant cut the thing out, and rerouted all the wires. I think that is the only way to do this. I couldn't find the exact thread, but I found a few threads with some pics from the work.

Making me rethink the rear hatch sub box and may go with the drivers footwell. Just gotta take the time to cut all the crap out and extend all the wires.

it's tight behind the panel of my 99 SAN and I already took out the heater. I only had room for a 10" with an extremely small box that has a pretty severe angle in the front to get under the gas hoses.
Had to go under there to replace a steering cable and the box has fallen apart because it got wet. I think one of my ballast empty hoses was leaking. Are there boxes not made of particle board?
