10" Sub - Alpine or JL... other?

I fried my Alpine Type R 10" sub last weekend and need to replace it. It is in a .65 cu. ft. sealed box powered by 420 watts @ 2ohms.

I was talking to the guy at the local shop and he recommended going back with a 10" JL W3. It is more expensive than the Alpine at $230. The Alpine is $179. I was pretty happy with the Alpine.

Is there another sub you'd recommend? The Alpine lasted 2.5 seasons, but I did buy it used - so I dont' know how much it was used before me. I'd like to not have to do this again in 2 seasons since the sub is located behind the kick panel under the dash and is kind of a pain to take out. I'd appreciate any ideas or thoughts you have.

RE: 10" Sub - Alpine or JL... other?

I am a JL fan through and through. Personally I think you can't beat there products for clarity and reliability. I just dug up an old JL 10W0 that I have had for 7+ years and installed it on my buddies 95 Ski Nautique and it sounds just as good as it did brand new. I wouldn't buy anything but JL if I was replacing the sub in my boat. You definately get what you pay for when buying audio equipment. I run two JL 300/4 and one JL 500/1 in my boat and wouldn't consider anything else. By the way here is a link to a W3 for less than what you can get the Type R for at the local shop. http://cgi.ebay.com:80/ws/eBayISAPI....E:B:EF:US:1123 Good luck with your decision.

I decided to go back with the Alpine. I found an open box deal at Crutchfield for $160. Still more than ebay, but they are a reputable dealer. Thanks for your input Latonkaboarder.

Open up the face and stuff a 12 in there... The Type R subs run in very small boxes, I think you would like the 12 better.
