    xmd3 / cmd5 remote compatibility

So I just took a 2004 clarion xmd3 out of a customer's boat because it powers up but no sound comes out... anyway the actual question is whether a newer clarion unit will work with the existing remotes (they're oval with a little display). The clarion website doesn't seem to have any useful information on this, and I've searched around on here and other forums... all I get is "probably" but someone must have replaced an older unit and had some success with this? I'm looking at the cmd5 as the closest replacement.
How 'bout a little reverse action...

FINALLY got through to a useful person at Clarion who told me YES the cmd5 will work with the old remotes (301 something or other) anyway I answered my own question!

I believe it will not work with the oval display remote. I know for sure that it does work with the little round one, as I did not change my little round one when I upgraded from XMD3 to CMD5. Used it yesterday to control my IPOD connected to the CMD5 via the CCAIPOD interface!

Has anybody swapped the oval remote for a round remote?

I'm considering upgrading my headunit and to the new Clarion model and want to install the new round remote on the dash.

yes, but I have a home built custom keyplate in my SE boat. I had to rebuild the keyplate.
