If I'm buying a boat w/o a stereo in it --- what should I do. I'm looking to drop about $1000. I want to put a cd deck in, sub, amp, and 4 speakers. What should I look for? Do I need marine speakers - or can I use regular speakers (will water kill them?). Where do people put the subs? What if they get wet? Any & all ideas are welcome.. Thanks much!

$1000 will barely cover the deck and speakers and install.
here is a price breakdown:
deck $350 ( eclipse with built in crossover- buy the deck new for warranty)
speakers $300 (2 pairs) ( hard one here)
amp (sub) $350 ( used jl audio 500/1 off ebay- these are rock solid sub amps. reliable and run cool with little power draw)
amp (main) $225 (used zapco 350 - 4 channel)
subs $250 ( 2 image dynamics idq10's in a isoberik)
box $200
install $300
you are looking at $2k for a "killer" system that will sound will not take 2nd place to anyone.
i would suggest starting off with the deck, main amp, and four speakers @ $1000 to $1100. then add the subs - subs are a expensive part of the system.
hope that helps.

$1000 is plenty i went on ebay and got a marine1000 watt amp for $99, 2 ten inch subs for $40 a piece and 2 6x9s for $39 and a $150 jenson 9424 cd player its all marine and people always stop me to see what i have in it, i also spent $75 on a amp wiring kit from walmart, and a few dollars on wood to build a box, i went from nothing and instaaled it all with a couple of friends took us 13 hours.
my amp is pyle marine
my subs are boss marine and so are my 6x9s

i would go a different route.
kenwood x-579 or alpine 9827------200-250
run mids and highs {4x6.5}off the head unit using the built in crossover hp at 125, 22 rms
4-6.5 inch kicker dx 60 for fill http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1477 -80.00
1 or 2 depending if your a bass head-l5 12" - in a ported box tuned to 37 hz-135.00 ea
1 hifonics bx1500d http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1507 249.oo
then save up for some evs tower speakers and an amp that will push them. and you will have a way way louder stereo then any of the above. and people wont be able to ask you, you wont be able to hear them.1988 Ski Nautique \"2001\"

Stereo's are such a personal thing. Each persons opinion is based on their own desires and needs.
First you need to answer (to yourself) the question concerning the use of the stereo before you can determine how much it will cost to install the system.
Ask yourself how you will be using the stereo on the water (and maybe off the water as well). Will you be using the stereo so the rider can hear the music? Is the primary use of the stereo going to be when you are tied up and just hanging out?
For me $1,000 would allow for a great system to be installed. Just my $.02.
Here is a link from Mikeski that provides a write up for a $1200.00 system that includes tower speakers and 3 amps.

Good luck with the install and don't forget to take some pictures so we can see the end results.SocBum
