    Clarion Head Unit

Is everyone happy with their Clarion Head Unit. I know when I order the boat, It is going to come with the Clarion. I not to familiar with the Clarion Head Unit. I have always used Kenwood or Alpine Head Units. Has any one change the Stock Unit out and replaced it with something else? If you have, is it a Marine HU with a Wired Remote? Can I get suggestion, pictures, comments on either the stock HU or aftermarket HU. I will be purchasing a 2010 230 here very soon.

      RE: Clarion Head Unit

Clarion head units are very solid. There is better iPod functionality but if you're keeping the menu and control on the iPod then this is a non-issue. There are stronger triple preout voltages but if you're using an EQ or line drivers then this is a non-issue.

But if you need comprehensive iPod functionality from the remote control(s) and/or you need a 4-volt preouts then Alpine is definitely the upgrade avenue.

This is really a decision that should be driven by the individual application and in the context of the overall system design, rather than just brand preference.

How many RCA outputs are on the back of the stock unit. I want to add three JL Audio Amp my my future system. This is my idea I want to use a 6 channel JL audio amp for the cabin speakers, a JL audio for the 4 MB Quart Speaker Cans, and a JL Audio to run a 10 Boston Acoustic G3 Sub(if it fits in the stock location. I know I need to build and encloser. I do not like the free air subs) I really do not want to use an EQ unless you really suggest it. I know that I will turn to you for more help and suggestions. Thanks David

          tazz,

The factory Clarion has triple pair of preouts. Unfortuneately the zone controls are only accessable from the port side as these features are not on the hardwired or RF remotes.

If you use the type of line drivers that provide voltage-driven controls then you'll have departmentalized tower and in-boat control at your fingertips, but, without the transverse to and from audio signal runs. This setup is clean, delivers the necessary voltage in order to split the preouts between multi-channels without a loss in gain and offers a key control function in the most beneficial locations. FYI, the new JL Audio HD amplifiers already have this fullrange level control provision built-in.

When its time, give me a shout and we'll work out a good system design.
