    Deafcon III Speaker Upgrade

Need help or suggestions with Deafcon III speaker upgrade. I am not really up to date on the latest in speakers but I do understand the HLCD concept and would like to be able to entertain boarders with their flavor of music. Right now you obviously cannot hear the music while boarding and this I would like to change.

I do not have to many custom marine stereo shops local for me to be able to trust their input, so I am going to do some homework of my own first. I want to keep the stock Deafcon III cans and just replace the speakers I think. If I am correct these were the standard in 2005 for my SANTE 210. My thinking is that if I do this I can save some money and maintain the factory look that I like.

I am still running all factory amps and factory Polk Audio stuff that came with it new. So if I need to add an amp or anything let me here your input. Or if I am wasting my time and money trying to keep the Deafcon cans let me know that as well.

    swancer,

I agree that your current pods are a solid piece of aluminum. So I would keep them.

The MOMOs are a good in-boat speaker at near field but lack the ability to project over the distance with any level of intelligibility.

The Bullet 650 HollowPoint HLCDs would be the ideal retro for your pods.

The MOMOs have a slightly undersized basket so its likely that you would have to increase the opening diameter of your pods by some small margin. We normally do this on a router table and would do so if you shipped us the pods.

Fortunately the aluminum is soft so you can easily do this by hand on your own if you choose to.

Your existing amplifiers, once reconfigured a little, will do just about anything needed with the context of in-boat speakers and sub. However, you would need to invest in a larger amplifier to effectively drive tower HLCDs. You need a real honest 125 to 175 watts per 650 HLCD speaker. We really like dual JL Audio G1300 monoblocks that will deliver 150 watts per speaker.

Any other questions... Please holler back.

      David,

You are very impressive and a huge attribute to this site. I have seen your other posts and it seems you are always the first to respond to these types of technical questions. I love it when someone is passionate about what they do. When it comes time to buy it will be from you guys.

When you say router the baskets exactly what do you mean and how much do you estimate having to remove? I have not taken the speakers out of the cans to see what is behind them. I may look at them this weekend just to try and get an idea of what you are talking about.

If I do this set-up you feel good about being able to hear it from the "ski zone" behind the boat?

        Rickey,

We enlarge the holes in a variety of pods using templates on a router table because the modification comes out as smooth as if it where stamped out. There are a number of ways to do it by hand if you don't mind the elbow grease and time.

The 650s have an oversized basket requiring a 145mm opening (about 5' 11/16 inches) so I'm pretty sure you'll require a slight mod.

The HLCD 650 grills are barely under 7-inches which should match up perfectly to the face of your pods without overhang.

I'm sure it works. I just can't say concisely what the margin is. With the above info you'll be set to pull a speaker and know for certain.

There is no question that four HLCDs with the right power will get the job done.

Here's a link to a YouTube video with your HollowPoint 770s:

        Rickey,

Thanks for the compliment and you're right, I really do enjoy this stuff. I find a way to learn something new every day.
