    Swap XMD1 with CMD4a

Is the CMD4a a one for one swap with a XMD1 in a 01 SAN? I am hoping to swap out the head unit without having to do any major construction. Any info would help.

The CMD4 is a little smaller than the XMD1. a trim ring would cover up any holes

They both use the same cut-out size 7"x2", so it's a direct drop in, I think they even use the same plug, but not 100% on that. The only major diff is that the CMD4 has a smaller face, so some of the original mounting holes for the XMD1 may be visible.

I swapped the CMD5 (same size as CMD4) for the older XMD1. Used the aluminum face place purchased seperately. Worked out great. It was a bit more work than originally anticipated. Connects direct to plug and even works with older wired remote.

There's no real structural issue with the change out. But the CMD is both narrower and taller than the XMD series. This only requires a cosmetic trimplate to conceal the previous four mouting screws that fall just outside of the CMD faceplate.

Here's a link to the trimplate.

Thanks for all the info. Is the CMD4a going to help my sound quality versus the XMD1, or do i need to just suck it up and buy new speakers and an AMP?

We installed the CMD4a on our 01 SAN and its awesome. The rotary volume knob is really nice because the driver can just give a quick flip when the rider is up and then once they fall they can just spin it again to lower the volume. The XMD1 is push button volume control.

we had a friend build a custom bezel for us...ordered some CF vinyl to match the factory dash but its not even close...I think we will clean it up this winter.

And our built up thread from last winter in case you are interested.

I have the older remotes (M101RYC) and want to utilize them with a CMD4 or 5. Am I out of luck? Thanks,

                    Swap

Yes it is a 1 for 1 swap as far as wiring and remote is concerned however I did have to trim the opening about a 1/4" to make new head unit slide in and not hit lip at top of armrest. As far as Steve and the head unit he is selling I already bought it and it worked out great!

Does anyone know if the older remotes (M101RYC) will work with a CMD5? I was trying to determine the difference between the CMD4 and CMD5 and I found this:

The cmd5 can control a ipod if you also purchase a CeNET 1276 black box from clarion. Your ipod plugs into the 1276 and then the 1276 plugs into the CeNET port on the back of the cmd5. The cmd4 has a CeNET port but the software in the head unit cannot control the ipod.

I would prefer to be able to control my Iphone (3g) from the remotes if possible (at least skip to next song.)

                      Thnks.

Any boat would benefit from adding an amp and getting the speakers off the head-unit. Better sound quality, especially at higher volume levels. The CMD4 may have a better EQ in then the XMD, but will still suffer when cranking the volume up.

I'm pretty sure your older remotes will work, but the Clarion Ipod interfaces do not work with every I device, so double check that it will work with your Iphone.
