transom remote install? On 99 Super Sport V-drive

    Hey Guys,

My new stereo just arrived this morning. Here is what i have
    Clarion M309
    Clarion Remote MW1
    Clarion Remote MW2

I want to mount the MW2 on the transom. what is the best way to create an opening for the remote. I really dont want to screw up the fiber glass, so any suggestions? Also where would be the easiest place to mount it?

How big of a hole do you need to cut. Using a hole saw is always the easiest. Just remember to go in reverse until you get through the gel cote.

Excuse my ignorance, but can you explain the need for going in reverse?

Gel cote is extremely fragile and it will snag, chip, and fracture with the abrupt teeth of the hole saw if you go clock wise. You can cut right through going in reverse and not have the aggressive teeth doing any damage.

If you go here, you can see where to factory mounted the remote for my 99 SAN (At least I think this was a factory job)., right above the grab handle.

I installed one on my '93 Sport.

I used a pencil compass to outline the area I was going to cut. I made sure I wasn't going to be drilling through anything on the backside of the gelcoat (i.e. fuel lines, gas tank, etc). Measure 2 times, cut once... as always. Then, I put some painters tape around the outline just to make sure the gelcoat didn't crack. As mentioned before, run the drill in reverse so the teeth of the hole saw don't catch and crack the gel. You'll get through it in reverse with no problem, it'll just take a little longer.

I was very nervous as it was the first big hole I had ever put in the boat, but it went well with no issues.

here are my thoughts on the subject...

I don't like transom remotes, most of them get the buttons pushed while a wakeboarder is putting his bindings on or get wet even though they are supposed to be waterproof.

I do like having a remote I can reach from the back of my boat. My rear remote is near the walk through, I use it almost as much as I use the one next to the driver. It is convenient for others in the boat to use if they want. It is right next to me the person dealing with rope/board/etc. It stays dry and does not get get sat on. I can reach it from the platform if I lean over the back pad.

Another option is the h2owaves remote. It is an rf wireless remote, you can surface mount a holster on the transom without cutting any holes, then you can use it while you are on the beach or from the wakeboarder position too. From 80' the remote reception is not great but it is better than nothing. It's an expensive little gadget at more than $100 for the transmitter/receiver combo but it is a very cool little gadget. I use mine very often, have even used it so I could control the sound level of my christmas music playing from the boat at the marina... Can be a peace keeper or shirt disturber depending on your mood.
