I want to replace the original Polk speakers in the tower cans, I don't intend to replace the cans just the four speakers. Does anyone have suggestions on some quality replacement speakers?

For marine its hard to beat the overall performance and durablilty of the POLK MM, is that what you are replacing? Why?
Look at the new MM series POLKS
Not sure if your have th round 6.5" or the oval 6" x 9". The new 6.1/2" ultra marine has the crossover intergrated into the speaker so it easier to mount.

Talk to Earmark - I believe they can get a HLCD conversion in those cans.
The HLCD is the only way to go if you are changing out speakers. Nothing else
is designed to get the sound out to 70+ feet.2006 SANTE 210 (Pending Sale)

MikeC, how do you use your tower speakers?
If you use them to primarily fill the boat with sound stay with a car speaker like the Polk. Be careful going to the new MM Polks, they are lower impedence and will require rewire so they do not overload the amplifier.
If you use the tower speakers to send sound out to the rider (or hope to), then I would recommend a HLCD in-can replacement. There is currently a little war going on between a few of these manufacturers so you can get the HLCD replacements for a pretty good deal right now. Send me a message to mikeskiw@gmail.com if you want me to send you a discount source.
For full service and great advice you would be wise to seek out David from Earmark, he even sponsors the audio thread where this question should have been asked. You can save a few bucks buying elsewhere online where there is no support and might make a mistake. David will help you get it right the first time.

Here is another option to look into for replacement HLCD's. I think the price for the 4 was around $550-600. I don't know how comparable that is in price or sound quality to other vendors, but it's just another option.

Mike,
If you go with HLCDs you'll definitely have to replace some of your amplification. And, depending on which pods you have, you may not be able to upgrade to an HLCD since their basket/opening is larger and would conflict with the existing assembly hardware for the pods. In fact, MOMOs have an undersized basket and a smaller mounting hardware pattern than the newer MM series or most other 6 1/2" coaxials. So, if you have the twin pods per each side with the Nautique logo inscribed in the front then any replacement takes a touch of modification.
While the original MOMOs are a good in-boat speaker, they're absolutely the wrong prescription for the tower. We've got to look at how you're using them and why they've blown before selecting a replacement.

Thanks for all the input. I have the original Defcon III, dual Clarion amps, four tower speakers, two in each can.
Optimum setup: Be able to run the tower speakers independent from the cockpit speakers and throw the sound at least to a surfer - not too worried about getting it to a wakeboarder.
I'm willing to work with a few modifications. Fortunately I have a friend who owns a waterjet and cnc milling company, so if I need to cut the mounting face of the cans I can get that done without too much trouble. I'm still early in the planning stage and haven't set a budget for this project yet, first I want to see what my options are and then decide which way to go.
David, I'll probably call someone at Earmark early next week to get some more information and prices on equipment.
