Has anyone had their tower speakers stolen before or do people generally not steal those? I am going to buy some new tower speakers from my boat and I'm wondering if I should opt for speakers with a quick disconnect.

generally i don't think tower speaker theft is a rampant problem. I personally don't know anyone who has had them stolen, but i know years and years ago brian grubb's were stolen off his boat down in orlando, and i left my garage open when i lived in an apartment complex and i had to full wakeboard setups stolen, but my winch, tools, and other wake gear was still there. and my boat, parked directly in front of the garage door was untouched and i have a 3some on the tower. i would say it all depends on where you live, where you keep your boat, and the random jerks that may reside there. i have 5000$ on my progressive ins. to cover anything stolen out of the boat that is not "part of the boat" i.e. engine, seats, prop, are considered boat.

Yes, people steal tower speakers. Even more so, the tower speakers send a message to a thief that there is likely a significant quantity of expensive electronics inside the boat as well. I pull my tower speakers off when I store my boat. I might leave them up overnight every now and then (like last night) but they come off whenever the boat gets put away.

I asked myself the same question. I just bought 2 x Wetsounds Pro485s - not cheap. I am installing them with Loctight so any random person who trys to steal them will need a breaker bar or air gun to remove them. Certainly not fool proof, but maybe a deterrent. (But the amps under the seat would be an easy target).

MikeSki's comment is accurate in that tower speakers are an indicator to would-be thieves that there are multiple amplifiers, a subwoofer and much more concealed in the boat. Oftentimes thieves enter and work under the boat cover and never steal the tower speakers because a.) they're more visually exposed while doing this, and b.) the market for tower speakers is very narrow comparatively to the equipment found in the boat which appeals to the broader automobile users.
Exile and Access Technologies are two tower speakers that do not require any tools to remove and reinstall. You can view both on our site.
Another deterent for permanent-mount speakers are S.S. security screws with an individualized drive bit.

I decided to go with the quick release tower speakers. I installed the Exile XM7's today. Besides the fact that they have a quick release and they come with neoprene speaker socks that act as carrying cases they sound amazing. I can't believe how loud and clear they are. The speaker clamps are wicked, the wires go through the clamp so there are no dangling wires. Looks really clean.
