    211 subwoofer wall rattle....any suggestions ??

in the process of installing the subs in a sealed box in the storage area and the side wall rattle is really bad.

the box is not in contact with the side wall but the wall rattles really bad - any suggestions to stop the side rattle ?

btw, i am not committed to my sub box design and placement ( i have 2 12's )

    thanks,

    mike

patience....so far everything is hooked up and working ( this is important)..

i am still in the process of the basic install (only 2/3 the way done)all the shop did was enlarge the speaker holes from 5.25" to 6.25".... all the wiring, speakers, headunit are installed (all the connections are hand soldered and shrink tubed)

i have the amps installed on the main board without the amp cover and the speakers have tempory grills ( it is really hard to find grills for image dynamic seperates).

imo the subs firing sideways in to the hull is not a good idea... it bounces off the hull and back onto the unreinforced sidewall.... there is alot of cancellation and vibration

i would assume it would be better to direct them into the storage area ( 1 firing foward and the other toward the back..and maybe adjusiting the phase.. have to test...

will post pics when somewhat done...

Yes as your finding out the subs can do some weird stuff. Every install can be diffrent, Depending on the subs the amps the cross over points and the driection the subs are fireing. Im not a big fan of having to fire the subs into a wall to get them to sound good. I like to point the subs in the direction you want the sound to go. Try shooting the subs towards the inside of the boat. I guess your running 2 12's . I know you cant fire 2 12's in that driection because the space issue.

I have a friend that has 2 12 inc ID-Max subs in his SAN in a box at the drivers feet shooting toward the driver. Im not impressed with the ID subs so I cant tell you it sounds good and for you to go and spend the time to make a box for that location, I did however think it was a good out of the way place to run 2 -12's I didnt think you could mount 2 12's in that location but it works.

You can always re-inforce what ever walls are shakeing.
Getting and keeping all the rattles out of your boat after you install a big system can take as much time as the install itself
        hope that heps

          grant,

how did he fit 2 -12's in the drivers area ? especially idmax's.....they require at least 1.25 eash for sealed and 1.75 for ported...i would considered 1 -12" by the drivers feet like you did...

in looking at your sub install it makes sense...one on each side of the boat so it doesnt overload one area...

i agree with you....firing the subs into the hull didnt sound that great...the deep bass was there ( 80hz @ 24 db crossover and jl 500/1) but the mid bass was weak and the side panel rattled too much..( i pulled the sealed box from my car to hear how it sounded before the box was built to hear how a sealed did)..

if i had to do it again ( i allready bought the 2 idq 12's)... i would go 4- 10" idq woofers in .5 cubic foot enclosures -1 one in the storage, 1 in the drivers, 1 under the fold up seat and the other in rear glass torage ( hence 4 subs- 4 corner intstall)

          thanks,

          mike

Its a tight fit. Box specs dont have to be Exact, when you are fitting somethng as tight as that your lucky to to fit it in there, Forget about trying to get the Exact air space. But from what he said the dimensions were it was close and its in a sealed box.

IMO the 12 is the best speaker for a boat, I bet you 1 12 W7 will out perform 2 12 ID-max so if you were going to re think you might want to go that route. IMO the ID-Max is a closer comparison to the Kicker L7

grant i like jl subs...i had jl subs about 3 years ago(they were w6's) and only got 2 years life out of them...they came apart at the surround (JL sayed it was the surround compound mixture was off- because i didnt catch it in the warranty period i was s*it of of luck).

i have heard the new w7's(2) in a friends bmw with a jl 500/1 and the 500/1 wasnt enough even for one...the w7's needed the 1000/1 for a amp... needless to say he went back to his image idq's and the system still sounded pretty good.

btw, i have ran 1000 watt sub amps(zapco) and low sensitivity subs before (kicker) and i wont do it again....it requires a total reworking of the electrical system and alot of caps/bat caps and it still drains the altenator....low sensitivity subs 82db - 85db dont make sense in a mobile setting - it kills the amps)

i havent done a system with the id max....( i now avoid 1000 watt requirement subs/ low sensitivity subs 82-85db) but i have heard one set up in a free space configuration and it was one of the best setups that i have ever heard ( i was shocked....all free air setups i have heard sound bad- but not this one). which tells me system design plays a big part in doing this...

i have had really good luck with the image dynamic idq series since the jl's. i have tried it in both ported and sealed.... they are easy to drive ( 91 db sensitivity), good surround construction, very small enclosures requirements (.85 for a 12"), high sound quality/musical. the only thing they dont have is the aluminum basket construction... ( i originally had 2 jl 500/1 sub amps and only now only need 1 to run 2 idq -12's)

the only drawback any 12 " is the box requirements (big) and the space available is small. but the 12 has the ability to get the sound out if the sub is tucked away...

i will take a look and see if i can sqeeze a .85 box and 12 in the 211 drivers area....

              thanks !!!

clubmyke, did you ever finish your install? Would like to see some pics of your sub placement, my new 211TE will be here in a couple of weeks and I need some ideas.

                Thanks

I have 2 10" subs firing into the floorboard and I think that adds a lot to the sound. Now you can feel it as well as hear it.
Just my .02 and an option to consider.

Are you running them in a 211? The 211 is hard to find a place to put them.

the stereo has been on the back burner - we had a very good run of good weather so i spent my spare time riding ( i am a major newbie rider)... so far we have 55 hours on the boat !!!!

                      here is the update-
amps are pulled and the new amp boards are built but not installed.
dash material just came in last week and made it to the shop this week

regarding the subs...the only place i see is under the dash without incurring too much expense ( might have to relocate the fuse box to underneath the front bow cushion though) this will allow for more support to the sub..

the only question is what will fit...1 12" will fit, 2-10" will fit, but i dont know if 2-12" will fit ( will be very, very close).. i think the rhino finish would work well since it would be out of site.

                      any other ideas ????

but mine is the Signature, you will have to relocate your relay/breaker panel but I think it's doable.

i spoke to m20 about relocating the panel to bow area... the panel is connected by a wiring harness....

this would help out with those few precious inches..
