    Quick Alternator upgrade question

I've been looking through the alternator upgrade threads and pictures and I don't see anything about replacing the 50amp breaker when upgrading to the 100amp alternator. Also seen some debate on Wakeworld about what that breaker is actually protecting, general consensus seems to be the wiring harness to the dash. That would mean the breaker stays and the lack of a larger one with the PCM kit would confirm this. Is this correct?

Piecing the upgrade together since I have to adapt it somewhat to the Pro Tec system anyway, and that will be changing back to a distributor at some point in the future when it finally gives up. Just trying to make sure I've got all the pieces together before I begin dismantling things this weekend, don't want to have the boat out of commission if the wind stops blowing.

You actually bypass the breaker all together. You replace the orange wire that is in the factory wiring with a new larger guage wire with a builtin 100 amp circuit. Look at Wakefuns instructions that he has in his album.

My breaker occasionally trips for no known cause. Would the upgrade to the alternator and the associated bypass of the breaker have the potential for significant damage? I have checked the contacts for the current alternator, and there is a small amoutn of corrosion, but nothing I would imagine tripping the breaker. Any ideas?

        Cool thanks.

Breakers get weaker after they have tripped, clean up the wiring and replace the breaker.

Thanks, the trick was getting off the phone and looking at it on the computer where I could actually read the instruction sheet.

Took a bit longer to get parts collected than I was expecting, but everything is finally here so the project has begun. Question for those who have done this. Did you actually remove the orange wire or just unhook it? I'm thinking it can temporarily stay with the alternator end cut off and capped up and then I'll remove it completely when it comes time for the Protec upgrade. Does
Anyone see a problem with that? Other than I'm lazy and want the boat back on the water ASAP.

Mine is still there. I just taped it really well and tucked it out of the way. I did that on two boats with no issues....

Thanks again, I crimped a cap on the end so I wouldn't be wondering where it went in the future. Everything worked great on the test run. 105 amp alternator and wire was less the $150 DIY couldn't have been easier once I figured out what was going on with the wiring.

                    $150? Is that a marine/ignition protected alternator?

Yep, it's a marine 10si. I got it from mycorrectcrraftparts.com (Boat Dr. And his wife Boat Nurse on CCF). I wasn't really sure what it was until I got it, I called because they had the cheapest price I could find on the PCM kit. I talked to him for about 5min because of I was concerned the Pro Tec system might get in the way and he said this is what you need. Got it 2 days later and didn't know what it was until I opened the box.
