Need advice on replacing speakers in my Titan Series II tower speakers

Should I invest $500 in my Titan IIs, or put the money towards some $1000 wet sounds or samson speakers?

I have Titan Series II tower speakers from about 2007 on my 2007 Nautique 220 tower. The internals are MB Quart 6.5 2-way kit with crossover and separte tweeter. Each speaker is powered by a separate JL Audio 2250 2 channel amp, bridged. I control the power to the speakers with a line control input control between the head unit and the two amps. Last year I noticed they distort at higher volume and generally dont sound very good so I am looking to replace either the internals of the Titan cans, or get completely new speakers such as Wet Sounds or Samson. I like the Titans because they still look like new and they are lightweight, and hug the tower nicely, however I dont want to put a lot of money in them and have them still not sound well. I am not too interested in sacraficing sound quality to hear the music while I am riding, its mostly for in the boat and when surfing. I would really rather not spend the $1000+ it will take to get completely new speakers, but I would if it was money better spent than fixing my current Titans.

I brought one of the Titan II speakers to my local Car Toys and they tested the components with a meter and told me the ohms were at like 2 for the tweeter and 6 for the mid (or the other way around, i dont remember) and they were supposed to both be at 4 ohms when new). They said some age and corrosion can cause this and they recommended i replace them (of course). Car Toys really pushes Focal I know from previous experience, which I know are good speakers. The ones they recommended are Focal 165V30 which are $499, and they said they would install them in the cans at no cost for that price, which they guessed would take some labor as the speakers are deeper than the existing MB Quart.

How we came at the 165V30 was that they played them in their listening room with the type of music i would normally listen to. They switched between some JL Audio and other lesser model Focal speakers ranging in price from $180 up the the $499 V30s. The V30s sounded the best and had the most bass from what i could detect. However, it is difficult to tell as you dont know how they are powering them and how it would compare to the JL Audio 2250s I will be using with them.

i have the same boat and the same titan 2 cans, they have the polk speakers in them now. there is nothing wrong with the current speakers, just not loud enough. i just ordered a pair of WS 696 RS to replace the factory speakers. the retail is $599, but that way you know what you are getting, and know it will sound great, in or 70' behind the boat.

Keegan, thanks for pointing me to those. They look like they would be a good choice. However, my Titan IIs from 2007 came with the 6.5 + tweeter kit, and I am not sure I could fit the 6x9s in there. My nautique dealer told me they changed the Titan II enclosures after 2007 and they came from the factory with 6X9s in them rather than the 6.5 + tweeter kit, and mine are before then and it is difficult to fit the 6X9s in them. I am not sure how accurate this information is, but i wouldnt want to order these and have them not fit. Let me know if you have any more info...

The Kicker Horn System we run in our Alpha 1 cans fit in the Alpha 2 Standard cans. They come in a pair of four, two Kicker Horns and two Kicker Midrange Drivers... $465.00

            jonfo,
The difference in the prior and later Titan IIs should be no more than a removable flat adapter plate. Its very possible that once the plate is removed you are left with a conventional 6x9" hole pattern. This is the first detail that I would confirm. In any case, the insert can be replaced with the appropriate pattern.
A speaker often will measure with a DCR (DC resistance) that is 20 percent lower than the AC nominal impedance. It is common for an 8-ohm tweeter to be used with a 4-ohm midbass. So I'm not sure that the test has revealed anything about the condition of the speakers. When a speaker has a partially burnt voice coil the enamel insulation that isolates the individual windings is partially burnt and exposes a few of the windings to one another and results in an unusually low DCR measurement. You would normally establish a problem by determining if there is a substantial inconsistency from tweeter to tweeter and midrange to midrange.

We are a dealer for both Wetsounds and Focal so I'm very familar with both products.
The Focal are legitimately one of the best car door speakers available. As compared to what you would want for a tower speaker they are insensitive and over-burdened with a complex passive crossover. The two objectives are very, very different. A car speaker is designed to distribute its energy over a broad dispersion pattern so it dissipates within a short distance while a tower speaker is designed to focus its high frequency energy for greater distance projection. A car door speaker is an infinite baffle designed to be loaded into the large chamber of a car door while a tower speaker is designed to optimimly operate in the small confines of a comparably tiny pod.

So if you are fine with a more subdued output and you only listen at rest or at maximum surf range, then a conventional car speaker can get the job done. But if you expect to listen at wake range without over-taxing the speaker and any degree of intelligibility then you want to go the HLCD route like the Wetsounds 696.

The Alpha 2 standard cans with the 6 1/2" with the seperate tweeter does not have the correct hole pattern to accommodate a 6/9..

Does the Titan II have a removable speaker mounting plate that you can replaced with a new plate? We've done this several times on the Titan I and I'm assuming that other than the shape difference the basic construction method would be the same. Any chance?

Speaking with a rep from Wetsounds by email, he indicates they are installed with the removal of the Titan enclosure screen which currently protects the 6.5". Here is a picture from the Malibu website:

I need to take a look at my enclosure again and see if it would be possible to mount a 6X9.

Unless the guys at Wetsounds made their speaker adaptable to the Standard cans, but performance cans are a direct swap out...

I included some pictures of the speaker housing and the mount for the existing speakers. I couple

                        1. My local nautique dealer told me that Wet Sounds recently made the Pro696RS 6X9 more tapered so they should fit in my old housing. He also said a non-wet sounds 6X9 such as the Polk Audio 6X9s would NOT fit in these cans.
                        2. Is is possible to just purchase the speakers in here without replacing the crossover? I believe the speakers are my weak link here, not my crossover. However, it seems all are sold as a kit with mid+tweet+crossover.

For that version you would need a newly machined adapter plate but I don't see a problem.
                          Passive crossovers are not interchangable.
Email me if you want a quote on the Wetsounds 6x9 HLCDs and the adapter plates.

I just put a set of the Titan II, with the Wetsounds 696's and they are awesome, you would probably just need two of the newer front trim rings, I picked up my pods with one missing and was able to pick up a trim ring for 15 bucks at the local malibu dealer
