Can you switch out the speakers in Nautique Titan speakers

I have the nautique titian speakers in the nautique chrome surround. The 6 x 9 speakers are past their prime and I am thinking of changing them but I really like the chrome nautique casing they are in. Can the 6 x 9 speakers be replaced within the current casing and put some new speakers in there? If so, can someone reccommend what I should replace them with? Has anyone done this before?

i too am considering the same and contacted wetsounds about their pro696rs series (http://www.wetsounds.com/pages/products/PRO696RS.html). john gyver, one of their key technical leads, explained that although the wetsounds would sound better than the original speakers, the metal casing does not produce optimal sound. from experience, i would also suggest changing the tower amp if considering wetsounds, as they love power. for now i've only spoke with wetsounds. i had them on my old boat and loved them!! let me know what you decide.

If the Alpha 2 cans are no good with the wetsounds speakers, why is Malibu using the wet sounds in the Alpha 2 cans as their option for the G3 tower?

I just replaced my 6x9 alphas with the wetsounds 696. Had four 6x9 polks on the tower now I have two 696's and can now be heard while riding. Really happy with the wetsounds they are awesome. Was a very easy swap out however I did need to trim the metail surround on the 696's to fit but can't see it as it under the chrome ring.
The next upgrade will be an additional 2 696 and a bigger amp.

            Hey guys,

I'll try to clear things up a bit. The PRO 696 RS will fit right into the Titan 2 housing. The easier way than trimming the frame of the speaker is to grind a tiny bit of the threaded bosses at an angle on the inside of the can where the front baffle bolts into. This is how the malibus are done. It is a tight fit but overall will only take a couple min to do the swap. We designed and tuned the PRO 696 RS for this housing. The speaker sounds awesome and will be night and day over a car audio based speaker. What Gyver was referring to is we do not build any of our complete tower speakers out of metal as the composite material we use is better acoustically than metal. However in this case, it is building a driver for an existing housing or replacing current drivers into a housing you already own, so you have the metal. Most metal housings are thin walled and can ring and resonate. The Titan can is extruded so it is a bit thicker and has less of these issues. Now adding some dynamat and acoustic fill to the housing will help this. So my suggestion is to replace the drivers and add a few pieces of dynamat to the back end cap and a few pieces to the housing. You do not need a lot as a few pieces will help. Also, you can add a little poly fill as well as this will also help any ringing. Not sure if Gee did this or just replaced the drivers. As you can see he is very happy with them

Know I didn't do the dynamat or fill but might put that on the todo list. I can say that I was amazed at the difference you hear people talk about it but after I actually heard the difference for myself. Wow. Car speakers and horn speakers are night and day behind the boat. These things are power hungry and I can only imagine what they could do properly powered I have the clarion 4 channel bridged to two channels and you just know they can handle more.

                Gee,

Did you keep the other pair of speakers on your tower too? I have two pairs of the alpha 2's with the polks still in them, but do have a new kicker 450.2 amp that I plan to run them off of once I redo my system. I have thought about possibly buying one pair of the 696's, can't really swing replacing both right now.

                  That is exactly my plan.

I left the other two polks up there for looks only. I read some threads about how you need separate channels for HLCD and conventional and interestingly I only have two wires coming down my tower so unless I run new wires can only wire a 2 ohm load and didn't have the amps for it.
I was happy with this running off the 4 channel Clarion in two channels.
I just bought and installed a Wetsounds HT2 do run these and can't wait to get them on the water. Also I just ordered another pair of 696's so waiting for them to turn up.

Well, I wouldn't mix a conventional speaker (Polk) with an HLCD (Wetsounds) on the same tower. The power handling is different and the output is different. So you have a challenge with this mix as to whether you protect a weaker speaker or attenuate a stronger speaker. The stronger HLCD will render the conventional speaker audibly invisible and that's a waste of both speaker and amplifier power. So if using four speakers on the tower make sure they're equal/symmetrical in every sense. Now, if it's just temporary and a matter of short term budget then go for it.

A small amount of HushMat, Dynamat, Roadkill, etc. damping material will take any ring or resonance out of the extruded aluminum pods. As Tim suggested, you do not have to cover the entire interior surface area to get the prescribed result. A series of 2"X2" adhesive-backed squares with 20% coverage will get it done. Filling the pod with polyester fiberfill (common pillow stuffing) or polyester batting (common quilt stuffing) will retard the coincidental reflections inside the pod. A dead pod is a good pod.

Just an update. Got to the water on the weekend with the HT2 running the 2 696s on the tower. Really impressed. Can hear the music while riding quite clearly. If I hadn't already order the extra 696s I probably wouldn't do the extra two speakers but they are on their way and will post and update when I get them in and on the water
