Currently I have a jl 10w6 in a sealed enclosure in my Yukon. What would happen if I put my xs-12 in there in a properly sized ported box? The amp is a jl slash 500/1 with a 1 farad capacitor. 90% of the time I'm happy with the output and im 100% satisfied with the sound quality.

Why not place the 10W6 in a bass-reflex enclosure? For just the cost of wood you can pick up another 3 dB of broadband output in a sound quality alignment (versus more in a narrow SPL alignment) and another one-third octave of bass extension before reaching the half power point.

It could be most any shape and a bass-reflex 12-inch enclosure could start at about 2.65 cu.ft. (4580 cu.in.) external displacement without losing too much efficiency. So roughly 15" X 15" X 20.375" or 14" X 14" X 23.375", etc.

My trucks electronics were installed at 404 motorsports. I'm sure you're well aware of what happened to them. I had my install done just a few months before they were shut down. Anyways, that is where I was first introduced to The amps and did some reading when I got home. 404 did really amazing work which sucks, but oh well.

but seriously... I had the Treo 12" sub lying around so I threw it in this box designed for a wetsounds XXX. It does pretty well and is too much for my tastes in a truck. Interestingly, I messed around with placements in the truck for a week and was amazed by the difference in performance levels just moving the thing around. Shooting forward it was completely ineffective, shooting up it was OK, shooting from rear passenger footwell toward rear driver side it was just OK, shooting from rear passenger footwell at the door it slammed (like 3x any other orientation). Here is the real sub I run when I am not messing around. Powered off a JL 500/1V2 driven high level from the factory Bose sub speaker wires (factory sub cut out of system). This sub is a JL13TW5 needed for the shallow mount and low volume behind the rear seats in front of the midgate in my Avalanche. The ported 10 is probably going to produce a similar volume level and I would say that is probably enough.Last edited by Mikeski; 03-26-2012, 12:43 AM.

hey Mike i am playing around with the idea of putting one of the TW5's in my boat and replacing the 2XJL W3 10's i have in there now. I m goning to put the new sub in the same location as the two i have now and just build a new box to fit this sub. My 10s seem to get really muddy at high volume, i believe it is do to lack of airspace and because they are fire straight into the floor from a very narrow distance. Anyways i was just wondering how that TW5 sounds, i have not been able to get a good reading on one from anyone using them.
thanks

I've got one in the boat, I like it now that I'm powering it with an HD 750/1. It got a little weak at speed with a XD 600/1. I'm kinda thinking about having a look at the TW3's when they come out especially if I can port them. I needed it for space more than anything. I have plenty of room side to side, just not front to back. I have it firing into the bow of the Excel mounted in front of the driver. I couldn't really tell any difference aiming it twords the driver so I decided to go for the stealth position.

The JL Audio 13TW5 is a special application woofer. It is the best slim line woofer by a country mile. Nothing comes close. But, this woofer has lower internal efficiency and is very limited in it's excursion capacity as compared to the JL Audio 13W6 counterpart for example. So if you need to have the slim line woofer for any reason then this is the way to go. If you do not have the special need then the conventional version will produce much more output. It is less of a concern in a vehicle cabin but more important in an open boat. Don't get me wrong, we have used the 13TW5 succesfully in boats when it was our best option.
