I am going to replace the 4 inside speakers in my 99 SAN to get rid of the mesh grills. Most posts suggest the Polk db651, I was just wondering if there is something at a similar price point that is newer/better?
I just bought a 2001 SAN and am also going to do this but I want to flush mount them and I found 2 links on this website but they are either dead or don't show or tell how to do this. Could somebody help us both and show us the install process to get rid of the pantyhose look?
I just cut some X's in the grill cloth and popped the speakers in there. They have been going great for 4 years and counting. If I had it to do over again, I would probably put some MDF rings cut in half under the vinyl, but it was easy and has worked well. I relocated the kick panel speaker to a custom built pod located under the throttle and the imaging is much better.
Over the past 3 years I have blown out so many Polk tweeters that I stopped recommending them. They are fine to about 25 watts of real power but I am pushing about 100 watts to each of mine and that's enough to make polk tweeter smoke. A good economical option with a better sealed cone speaker design are the Kicker KM6200. I am still running the Polk db650 in my slalom boat but it only has 25 watts to each speaker (4 on a clarion amp).
Mike, Really? I am running right at ~100 watts to each speaker and the db651s have held up great for 1.5 years, no issues. I figure if one blows ill replace the whole set with WS xs650's and call it a day, but for now they jam pretty good. Specs say RMS is 100 watts each/peak at 200 watts each.
Really. The MMC650's blew out the electrolytic caps on the tweeter crossovers then the tweeters themselves after I repaired the crossovers. The six db651 (plural, db651s is a different model) only lasted half a summer. They did fine until the first link-up then 5 out of 6 blew themselves apart in one day.
