10" down firing sub box??

I have been searching and found that some of you have made some really nice looking down firing sub boxes. I have a couple of questions.
Are the boxes sealed or ported?
Do the slots on the bottom provide enough air flow?
I am currently looking to try to put 2 10's in one box and the guy I was working with was concerned about not having enough air with the slots on the bottom of the box for it to sound good.
Any input is appreciated.

there are different types on configuations ( i think about 7 orders- do a google search for 3rd order sub and you will get the pro/con of each)

a down firing sub is fine, i would recess the sub into the face and give it at least 4 "....

Here is a link to the box I am talking about. I can't tell if this is sealed or ported. I don't know if those are cup holders or ports? Also when you say recess it and give it at least 4" do you mean for the slots or resessed in 4"? I am trying to replace the seat box in my 97 SS so I have height limitaions on the box. Overall I can only be 7" high. I was figuring on recessing them away from the floor by about 1" and then having the slots front and back similar to the ones inthe pictures on the link.

I have a down firing 10" sub in my 216. I gave my installer complete liberty on what size box and what configuration, and he said the down firing position got the best response out of the sub considering where its located. I'l measure the box and post some dimentions when I can. I cant recall if he ported it or not. The one thing I do know is that it BUMPS, and thats still with the lone 350 watt Kicker amp. Cant wait to add the 850.

I've got two 10" solobarics in a custom box behind the driver seat and they hit HARD in a sealed enclosure. Since the box height is so shallow, they have less than an inch of clearance to the floor, but that is plenty of space. To run multiple subs you really just need to look for subs that are designed to run in the space you have available.

That's wakejunky's box. Those are cupholders not ports, the box is sealed with a partition between the woofers. I believe it's just over a cubic foot per 10" driver. By the way those are Dayton Quatro 10s from www.partsexpress.com. He is happy with the performance of those sube in that box. He took my recommendation to use paper cone subs coated with wet look. They are cheap enough to replace if they ever go swimming.

Thanks for the input. I am going to go ahead and build them into a sealed box similar to wakejunky's. I pm'd him and he gave me the low down on it. It is a pain trying to find a spot of the subs to go in my boat. I have most of the space filled with sacs so it didn't leave much room for sub. Plus I didn't want to take away too much of the other storage space behind the passanger seat because I need it for backpacks and other gear to be put while riding. I had to basically fill the engine compartment and ski locker with sacs because my deal with the wife was that there wouldn't be any sacs visible. My old ride you couldn't even walk in cause there were sacs laying everywhere. Thanks again for all the info. I will let you know how it turns out when done. I have some subs that I plan to use that were just sitting in my basement, some older Boston RS 10's if those done sound good I will look into some others, but they use to pound in the probe I had.

I asked my installer about my sub box. He said it is sealed as well. Couldnt recall the exact size he made it but it was based off the speaker's specifications. Sounds great too.

If you're planning on making the box the same height as your seats you may run into some height and/or volume issues, especially if those RS 10's are very "tall" or they require much enclosure volume. The newer SANs have a lower floor offering more space to work with and a greater variety of subs to choose from. Whatever you come up with, be sure to post pix!!

I just finished my seat sub-box the other day. It contains 2 10" downfire for my 2003 SANTE. I didn't got through a whole lot of trouble determining volume for the sub like I read in countless stereo posts... but can tell you... it THUMPS GOOD!! I am only running a 300W MTX sub with it... and am amazed.

I have a JL 10w6v2 in the JL factory box up under the dash, fits perfect, hits hard, and looks completely stock, no way to tell its there until you turn on the stereo.

Thanks for the offer. I have a friend who is working on it for me. We are using the plastic enclosure that was originally there and cutting the inner part out. Then we are trimming 3/4 off the top and putting a piece of MDF for the new top. We are going to then run some 3/4 stringers along the bottom for the vents. Glass the whole box and it should be good to go. I will post some pics of the finished product.

Here are the pics of the box done. Basically took out the original seat bottom and cut the inside lining out of it. Then glassed the intire inside and add MDF to the edges. Trimmed 3/4" off the top of the box and cut a new piece of MDF for the top plate. Then added 3/4 teflon rods to the bottom for spacing to keep it off the floor and recarpeted it with the old carpet. So far it sounds pretty good, but I haven't had a chance to really crank it.
