Blown speaker - making a 10 sound like a 12

I was running my 12 in my car until last week when I installed it in the boat. The 10 just didnt quite have the same kick as the 12, I kept pushing it until it gave up tonight...

Hey Mike,

I truly think that you did that on purpose just so you can upgrade to the 12" sub :razz:

I will try that strategy myself, blow up the 10" Polk/Momo sub, take a picture of the blown sub, show the pic to the wife, and tell her we need to upgrade to the JL subs, which means upgraded Amps too.

I was not actually trying to blow it up, it's a Dayton Quatro 10 from www.partsexpress.com. It's rated at 200 watts and I was running to an amp putting out 400 watts. It was in the trunk of my convertible and it happened when I was going down the freeway with the top down at 75mph. I had just turned the bass boost on at the amp the night before... bad idea.

JoeCos, I already have a 12 to put in there so I didn't need the justification. I had the Alpine 12 that I put in the boat in the trunk for about a month, funny how it is hard to go backwards. I was satisfied with that 10 for over a year before I started messing around with the 12s.

If you look at the picture closely you can see where the paper cone was starting to fold on the right edge from over extension. The fold probably caused the VC to kick sideways and jamb. I was careful when I took it apart (thinking recone maybe), all the damage had already been done. It took me about 20 minutes to get it taken apart, the speaker was still pretty hot.

Now I need to get busy, the car needs the 12 and the boat needs another 12... Funny thing I consider these simple little systems when compared to the other stuff I see people posting.
