Need to replace Polk Momo MMC650's

I need to replace 8 Polk momo MMC650's in my 226. These are the speakers that came with the boat. I am not trying to upgrade anything as the system sounded fine to me, but the speakers are deteriorating and need to be replaced. I was hoping I could buy the exact speakers and do an easy swap, but apparently this speaker is not made anymore. Polk says the MM651 is the replacement, but these do not have the external crossover like my MMC650s did. They guy at Polk suggested that I don't need the crossover??

Probably a dumb question for you guys, but does this sound right? Polk says the MM6501 has the external crossover, but the tweeters are external and would need to be mounted somewhere else which I don't want to do. I want to keep it simple. Any suggestions or advice? Is there a different speaker I should be looking at that would be more plug and play?

    Thanks,

    Curt

Actually Polk kinda lead you wrong. The direct replacement for the MMC650 will be the MM651UM. It has a built-in crossover now mounted to the back of the speaker. They have tweeters that can be mounted internally in the mid-bass grill, or externally. The main issue you will have with the MM651 is they run at 2.7 ohms instead of 4 ohms like the MMC650 and MM651UM. That will end up giving you a 1.35 ohm load at the amp/HU which could cause you problems down the road. Here is a link to the MM651UM... http://www.polkaudio.com/products/mm6501um

Edit: After looking closer at the MM651UM I may have been wrong about the tweeter being able to mount into the mid-bass grill. You may want to contact Polk about that for clarification.

would the stock speakers from the new G boats work? I'm redoing the system on my brand new boat and will have 3? pair of the stock polks avail. No idea what they're worth. Will also have the amps and subw once the new install is done.

I have some of the MM6501UMs and MM651UMs sitting at home waiting for me to have time to install them. For the MM6501UMs you must mount the tweeters separately. For the MM651UMs, the tweeters are mounted in the grill, and are not designed to be removed from the grills.
If you open the Owner's Manual on the link core-rider posted, it actually shows the difference.

With both of these speakers the cross overs are now mounted to the back of the mid range driver, so they both have a cross over, you just don't have to find a place to mount them.

The MM6501UM and MM651UM are identical, spec wise, except for the way the tweeters mount, and the MM6501UM is rated for a little more power. Both are rated at 4 ohms, so you should be fine there.

It's the MM651 / MM6501, without the UM on there names, that are only rated for 2.7 ohm, and could cause you to drive your amps to hard.

I would recomend looking at the MM651UM for an easy swap.

This link is a good overview of the Polk MM series http://www.polkaudio.com/products/series/mm#allmodels

You may have to click on the All Models, for some reason the link appears to alway go to the overview.

When the tweeters on my MMC650 bit the dust I replace all 6 with Polk db651 speakers and was pretty happy with the result until I blew the tweeters on those as well. Considering I was pushing about double the rated power to the speakers I decided to go with something that could handle the power on round 3 (Wetsounds XS650, which required enlargement of the holes = PITA).

If you are not pushing lots of power I would go with the Polk db651 for the price. I prefer the newer grill mounted tweeters with no pole piece like the Wetsounds, Exile, and a few others but they can be a bit more expensive.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We spoke to a local stereo shop and he Can you explain? Does this mean that the amps are not powerful enough to push these speakers? If we find this is the case, should we upgrrecommended we go with the 2.7 ohm speakers, so that's what we did. He also talked us into adding an equalizer which we ordered as well. You mentioned above that this may cause the amp to drive hard?? If this ends up being the case, can we upgrade the amps to fix? Sounds like this may turn into a project I wasnt looking for.

                Thanks again!

Mesajeeper, your message is a little jumbled. Not sure what you are asking.

I would recommend against using the odd 2.7 ohm speakers unless you specifically need that impedence to optimize your amplifier power. They work well when you have 6 speakers but not 8.
